The wife of Bro. Dr. Willam Sutton, Sr. passes.
Leatrice Hubbard Sutton, 76, died on Saturday, October 20, 2007
at Touro Infirmary. A 1949 graduate of McDonough #35 H.S. and a 1953
graduate of Dillard University, she earned a master's degree at LSU-New
Orleans.
Prior to retiring, she was a public school teacher in Washington, D.C.
and New Orleans before becoming director of student teaching at
Dillard. She was Miss Dillard, 1952-53. She went on to become First
Lady at
Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, MS when her husband,
Dr. William W. Sutton, served as president for 10 years, 1988-1998.
Dr.
and Mrs. Sutton met as Dillard freshmen, dated during their junior and
senior years and married in 1954. Theirs was a love, and a marriage,
admired and respected by many. While at Dillard, she became a member
of
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.; he became a member of Omega Psi Phi
Fraternity Inc. She was a Dillard cheerleader; he was captain of the
football team.
Always helping others, Mrs. Sutton was an active community servant. She
served as a board member of the Girl Scout Council of Northwest
Mississippi for 10 years and had been serving the Girl Scout Council
of
Southeastern Louisiana for nine years at the time of her death. Mrs.
Sutton
was active with several parishes throughout New Orleans, most recently
the former St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church and St. Thomas Apostle
at UNO. She was an Archousa of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Inc (Boule')
and
an active member of the Dillard University Alumni Association. She was
president of the Quettes of Rho Phi Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi
Fraternity at the time of her passing.
Mrs. Sutton was the daughter of the late Felix Hubbard and the late
Mercedes Barthe' Hubbard. She was raised by the late Pearl J.
Blackburn,
her godmother. In addition to her husband of 53 years, she is survived
by six children, Will Sutton (Omega, spouse Cheryl) of Cary, NC; Dr.
Averell H. Sutton Sr. (Omega - spouse Tara) of San Antonio, TX; Dr.
Sheryl
Sutton Smith (spouse Clinton Jr. - Omega) of New Orleans; Alan Sutton
(spouse Deidra) of Houston, TX; Allison Sutton of Champaign-Urbana, IL
and Gavin Sutton of New York City; and eight grandchildren, William
"Tre" Sutton 3d, Talmon Smith, Brandon Sutton, Jesse Smith, Ashleigh
Sutton, Clinton Smith III, Ryan Sutton and Averell H. Sutton Jr. She
is
survived by brothers Merlin and Verdel Hubbard and sister Elva Hubbard
Robert, all of Los Angeles. Brother Nathan Hubbard and sister Velma
Hubbard
Pavageau preceded her in death. Loved by many, also surviving are a
host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends who
considered her a grandmother, mom, auntie, nanny, advisor, mentor and
more.

2916 Paris Ave., on Saturday, October 27, 2007 at 11 a.m. Visitation:
