The blonde elf-archer's name is Legolas. His real name is Orlando Bloom.
Personally, I'm a huge fan of Tolkien- and I really loved the books- Which I read just prior to the movie comming out. It was beautifully done, with stunning visual effects and it turned out to be very realistic. Since I've read the books, I can't anwser James' question, however, I can say..that I wasn't at all dissapointed in the fact they skipped over a lot or changed it around a little. Face it, if they stuck EVERYTHING in those books into the movie- not only would it be five or so hrs long, but it would also cost probably twice as much. lol.
And the idea about Arwen...well, women really don't play a big part in the book- Pretty much just Arwen, Galadriel, and Eowyn. And Arwen just looks pretty most of the time, and Eowyn is the one that really kicks ass. OH- for the record, Eowyn isn't being taken out of the movie...her character will be played by a miranda somebody...so that's good..I'd hate Eowyn to be replaced- plus it would cause hella problems with Faramir, and Aaragorn, in the end.
