It's because of who the Babe was; if it wasn't someone like Babe Ruth (but was instead Jimmie Foxx or Frank Robinson), it wouldn't be such a big deal.
There have been volumes about how important Babe Ruth was to baseball, so I won't even begin to go into it here. However, that has a great deal to do with why 2nd place is such a big deal.
