When you sign up for the military, you take what you get. My mom and step-dad spent 5 of their first ten years separate from one another. He was in Korea, Kosovo, and Afghanistan. The five years does not account for the months in the field or six-month longbow apache training missions. He had sense enough to get out after his 20.

I think it's dumb to demand that bodies in a warzone be returned unscathed.

When you are in the army, the army decides what is best for them. You belong to them. You basically sell your soul. In return, they give you free medical care and free housing (or at least a living allowance for off-base housing.)

The family needs to hush and be glad they got anything back. A lot of families get nothing if their soldier gets into an ied.
