Sigma Chi Fraternity comes to Knox College

Sigma Chi Joins Greek-letter Community at Knox College
February 1, 2006

EVANSTON, Ill.-Kappa Pi Omega at Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., has been invited to affiliate with the Sigma Chi Fraternity. According to Doug Shapiro, director of expansion, each of the 19 members proved to fulfill the Jordan Standard, a minimum set of requirements for individuals before they can become brothers.

To be recognized as a fraternity on campus, Kappa Pi Omega was formed in October 2004 and began having formal meetings. It was approved by the Inter-fraternity Council and the Pan-Hellenic Council on Nov. 8, 2005 and received approval from Knox faculty, 48 to 8, just days later. Then, Kappa Pi Omega contacted general fraternal organizations. After meeting with representatives from several fraternities, the group decided they wished to affiliate with Sigma Chi in December 2005.

According to Erin Lawless, assistant director of campus life at Knox, the Fall 2005 GPA average for Kappa Pi Omega was 3.23, the highest among Greek organizations on campus. Also, this group of men requires each member to complete ten service hours per term, more than any other fraternity at Knox. “This is a group of gentleman that Sigma Chis will be proud to call their brothers,” explained Adam Peterson, associate director of expansion for Sigma Chi. “The guys are very impressive and made me believe they'd be a great chapter.”

Knox is one of the most exemplary liberal arts institutions in the U.S. and hosts one of the oldest and successful Greek-letter systems in the nation. Sigma Chi is proud to be the first nationally affiliated fraternity to join the community at Knox since 1937.

Sigma Chi is one of the largest collegiate fraternities with undergraduate chapters at more than 200 colleges and universities and more than 200,000 alumni members. Sigma Chi provides a welcoming environment for young men of different temperaments, talents and convictions to enjoy a unique lifelong bond that extends far beyond college. Through world-class leadership training, extensive mentoring programs and a strong focus on academic achievement, Sigma Chi sets itself apart as the preeminent collegiate leadership development organization, challenging its members to live by its core values and exemplify Character-in-Action™ in every aspect of their lives, and the lives of others.
