Tough love is good. A parent can love an alcoholic/addict to death. Substance abuse/addiction destroys families. I'm watching as it is tearing apart my in-laws as they refuse to kick out their 40 year old addict daughter... Often, what people don't realize is that addiction is a family disease, affecting all familiy members, not just the abuser/addict. Al-Anon has meetings for parents of alcoholics/addicts. I know people who have found them very helpful - if only to find that you're not alone, and you're not crazy. If you can't find a listing for Al-Anon, you can probably find a listing for "intergroup" or "alcoholics anonymous" and ask them about Al-Anon meetings. Your area AA might have a website that has a link to Al-Anon. (Maybe even his school counselors or your clergy can get you in contact with Al-Anon.)

I pray for your son, that he might find Recovery. I pray for your family, that they too might find relief and some joy this Christmas.
