Our little Cheyenne does something similar to the doorbell ringing, she "knocks" on the door. Really she paws/scratches at it, but it works the same way. When she needs to go potty, she just goes over to the back door, scratches, and then sits and waits. Now, sometimes we don't come as quickly as we should and then she'll come sit in front of us and stare. (We know this look. ) She might turn around a few times and then go to the front door and sit.
We didn't really train her to do any of that. I think she just figured out that when she went outside she had to go through a door.
