My husband was out of town for my birthday this year, so we celebrated beforehand... he took me out to dinner. He also made sure to call on my birthday, but he calls every day when he's away.

You could do that... just pick a day before or after his trip and celebrate then. You could also send a card, timed to arrive on his birthday, to his hotel.
