Well, there are a decent number of Asians in classical music. And you're right, Asian culture doesn't really encourage performance (outside of classical music), even in the "old country." When my mom was a little girl in Hong Kong, she was scouted by a director. She could have become top child actress (like the girl who ended up in the movie did), but my grandmother didn't need a kid making money for the family.
