Actually, in some towns, trains are not loud and don't have "white things with bells and flashing lights." There was a case in Florida where the train that passed through the town only had a sign that said Railroad Crossing on the street. It didn't have a bar that came down while the train passed. And the train conductor was not required to blow the horn while he passed by the town. This makes for a very quiet train, and, at night, it also makes for an almost invisible train. Two young girls were driving at night and crossed the tracks and got hit. Unfortunately, they both died.
