In the matter of Most Irritating American (television-related)
Saw this in the Globe and Mail Entertainment section (keep in mind that this is a conservative paper up here) and had a good laugh - thought I'd share
Quote:
In the matter of Most Irritating American (television-related), a consensus has been reached. The winner is pugnacious pundit Ann Coulter.
The runners-up (with pithy comments from readers included) can also be revealed. The No. 2 is Dr. Phil ("a self-important creep"). The No. 3 is David Caruso ("can't act," "poseur"). At No. 4 is Nancy Grace ("bloodthirsty word-that-rhymes-with witch"). The No. 5 is Robert Novak ("moronic blowhard").
In the end, a number of readers declined to vote for George W. Bush, taking the view that Americans vote for Dubya, not Canadians, and he has already won enough elections. A late surge of support for Regis Philbin ("a sickening little smartass") failed to push the little irritant into the Top Five.
During the final 24 hours of voting, a terribly important person at CBC put it to me that Coulter should be removed from the list on the grounds that she's not "irritating," she is plain dangerous. Some other readers agreed, more or less, including one who expressed the view that being named the Most Irritating American would only please Coulter.
Me, I take the point, but disagree. Sure Coulter is prejudiced, nasty and, in the case of Canada, terrifically ignorant. But the best retort is laughter. Congratulations to Ann Coulter on winning the premiere edition of Most Irritating American (television-related).
