You may fear the unknown, only seeking to live in the shelter of continuity and predictability. It's difficult to accept any kind of bad news (i.e., divorce, layoff, death of a loved one, illness). You will go through the stages of shock, denial, anger, confusion, guilt and bargaining with God. You can't ignore your feelings but you must learn the lesson they bring. Life can back you up into a corner forcing you to choose between surviving or folding, falling to pieces or staying in peace. Once you learn acceptance, you are able to begin the healing process. Acceptance doesn't mean that you are giving up or that any acts of wrong against you are justified. Acceptance creates a state of mind that is open to serenity, solutions and new beginnings.
Emotional pain can either cause you to shut down or focus on your priorities by asking yourself, "What's my next step?" Take it step by step, day by day.
After losing his son to violence, actor Bill Cosby stated in a Larry King interview, "Of course, it hurts, but I'm learning that in triumph, don't jump too high and when tragedy comes, don't sit too long."
