Sales tax in NYC is 8.625%.
RE: salaries, it all depends on the field. I would probably start out making more in Florida than I do here in NYC--but there are opportunities here that will allow my salary to increase considerably in the next few years.
But, uh...I'll just blame it on the sunshine.
