Mass. Legislature Votes to Take Indian Ban Off Books

The Massachusetts Legislature Thursday voted to repeal a 330-year-old law banning Native Americans from entering Boston, removing a potential obstacle cited by Unity: Journalists of Color in considering Boston as a site for the 2008 Unity convention, the Boston Globe reported today.
"The measure will be sent to Governor Mitt Romney; an aide said he will sign it," reported Chris Reidy and Janette Neuwahl.
Laura Nicoll, a spokeswoman for the governor, told Journal-isms today that said she could not say when that would be; only that the governor had 10 days to sign.
"The Muhheconnew National Confederacy, a group of Northeastern tribes, has advocated for the law's repeal since 1996, said Gary McCann, the group's policy adviser," the Globe story continued.
