Health Disparities: Zetas Confronting the
International Issues through
ZHOPE (Zetas Helping other People Excel)


On June 16, a Zeta Phi Beta Sorority delegation, led
by International President Barbara C. Moore, will
visit the United Nations for a day-long series of
meetings with UN dignitaries, subject matter experts
and researchers. The Sorority members will discuss
ways to assist the UN and other organizations in
addressing health care, poverty and human development.

The visit will mark the first time the Sorority has
presented its international service initiative, Zetas
Helping Other People Excel (Z-HOPE), to UN officials.
Z-HOPE, launched in 2002, builds on the Sorority's 85
year legacy of service by offering an interactive,
holistic and multidimensional service initiative
designed to enhance, cultivate and empower
participants to develop health promoting lifestyle
choices across the lifespan.

In more than 500 communities around the US and across
the globe, Zeta women are on the forefront of several
key health and wellness initiatives. Most recently,
the Sorority as focused its international efforts on
one of the United Nation's newest targets: access to
safe drinking water and basic sanitation.

Two years prior to United Nations Secretary-General
Kofi Annan's declaration announcing 2005-2015 as
"Water for Life Decade", Zeta Phi Beta members
launched a Sorority-wide effort to increase access to
safe drinking water in Africa.

One of the largest predominately African-American
women's service organizations, Zeta Phi Beta was
awarded Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) status by
the United Nations Department of Public Information in
2001. As an condition of its NGO status, Zeta Phi Beta
must demonstrate a long-standing involvement with
United Nations issues.

Since its founding in 1920, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority,
Inc. has been committed to addressing health and
welfare concerns and has conducted local, national and
international programs to improve conditions among
those in need. While Sorority programs have been
focused in African-American communities, all programs
and services are open and available to the public
without regard to race or social status. Zeta women
are committed to the obliteration of obstacles that
impede progress for all mankind.
