George Washington: Pi Kappa Alpha raises thousands for burn foundation

Fraternity raises thousands for burn foundation

The Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity raised about $4,000 for the nonprofit D.C. Firefighter's Burn Foundation at its first annual Pike Fireman's Challenge on April 15.

Seven of GW's eight sororities competed in the challenge's various events. The Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority won the challenge.

D.C. firefighters and fire trucks from Foggy Bottom's Engine 23 were on hand for the event and gave Pi Kappa Alpha access to fire-fighting equipment, including spraying targets, a 30-foot slip, slide hoses and fire hydrants.

"The firefighters literally piled in the truck and left whenever they received calls (for possible fires)," Pi Kappa Alpha President John Van Name said.

The Pike Fireman's Challenge is Pi Kappa Alpha's first philanthropy event on campus since its colonization in April 2003. The Firefighter's Burn Foundation is dedicated to burn prevention and education, burn research and improving the quality of life for burn survivors.
