You should also note that when you apply for unemployment insurance the employer doesn't have to pay if they can show you were fired "for cause." So they have an interest in saying you were a lousy employee in the hopes that they and their insurer won't have to pay (and consequently their premiums won't go up). Since, as you mentioned, they are low on money, he may have told the claims guy all that stuff for that purpose. While I think it's a lousy thing to do, that should give you a better idea of the context of what was going on.
