I haven't read the article yet (I will, I promise!) but I can say that I agree with the professor in this respect. I think that this movement is especially visible among the ranks of young, professional African Americans.
I think that the feeling of not wanting to be lumped in with the underclass, and a desire to distance oneself from the perspective that black=criminal has a lot to do with that. It's not the
only reason, but class distinctions are a mitigating factor, to be sure.
