I would completely agree - get a new member/pledge manual. I read mine (AOII) cover to cover - especially the history the section. I also was able to join in a few new member meetings with the class I initiated with. That made initiation neat as I wasn't a complete stranger to them and them to me - and a good bonding tool as I was adviser the following semester!

). Pledge manual is good - and don't worry about memorizing everything just know the main points (founders, colors, mascot, symbols, etc).
