Those are fantastic. The good news is the newspaper is able to detect good writing when they see it. Hopefully some of that rubs off on their staff reporters.
And by the way, when I was in school we had a cop speak at a chapter meeting. He told us if a sister is stopped by the cops for any reason, KEEP WALKING. DO NOT HELP. And those are words to live by.
