Because the OP was unnecessarily rude and because the OP brought her mothering philosophy into it.
Up to that point, two people had basically said some version of "tell your daughter to ask her own Greek Life office." In response, one of those two people got this (with emphasis added).

Do long-timers here sometimes get unnecessarily brutal? Without a doubt. But in this instance, it was the OP who "started it."
