IT WAS JUST A PROMOTIONAL FOR ONE DAY ONLY!!!!!!!!!
University changes name to Jordan FOR ONE DAY ONLY
N.C. A&T will receive money from MJ’s clothing line
ASSOCIATED PRESS
GREENSBORO, N.C., Sept. 10 — Officials from North Carolina A&T State University announced Monday that the university is changing its name to Jordan University. The name change is a result of an undisclosed financial and in-kind contribution from Jordan Brand, Michael Jordan’s line of sports inspired footwear and apparel.

i read the link from the post of ct4 and i have numerous questions, such as:
is nc a&t in financial trouble?
is the money being given in one lump sum or over time?
is there a max to the amount of money to be given?
how much money will be given?
what is the money going to be used for (scholarships, computers, new buildings, etc)?
i guess it could be worse. years ago, i remember mj catching heat for donating money to have a golf course built. some people thought he should give more back to black people. maybe this is his way of further solidifying his legacy. who knows...

This is the first that I have heard of this. My mom is an alum of NC A&T and I sent this link to her to see what she thinks of it. This is very interesting.
What I want to know is, what do people who graduated from, or are attending now feel about the name change? I think I would be feeling some kind of way.

Well I think that it's great that Michael Jordan has donated this money to a HBCU. However, what I don't understand is the reason for changing the name of the university. I mean, whether Michael donated $2.00 or $2 million, what is the significance of changing the name of the university? I could see them building a center, gym, or something like that and then naming THAT after Michael Jordan, but the whole school? What's up with that? Did Michael say that in order for them to receive this money that they had to change the name? I mean, someone help me understand this. PLUS...Michael Jordan, to MY knowledge, never even ATTENDED North Carolina A & T. I feel that the university's officials need to think about the meaning behind the school's original name, ask the opinions of the students and alumnae, and they need to really think about this because from MY point of view, it looks as if the school is willing to compormise anything (including it's original name) just for money.
Some years ago, a woman donated something like $20 million to the University of South Carolina (in Columbia, SC). All she asked was that the majority of the money be used to enhance and build up their business department. This woman was an alumni and her major was business. Yet there was and still is no talk about even changing the name of the university once she donated this money.
Bill Cosby has donated millions of dollars to different universities (including Spelman), but you don't see any of them changing the name of their universities to COSBY UNIVERISTY.
I just don't get it.

That is what I was thinking. I think it's great that he is donating this money to a a school, and a HBCU at that, but to change the name of the school. Why not like korscru mentioned a buidling, or a gym or something.
I don't get it either. I just don't get it!!!

UPDATE
I passed this information on to a listserve that I am on and received this information.
The name change is a publicity stunt to promote MJ's new
line. It is not a REAL name change nor a PERMANENT name change.

the people who are paid to advertise and market his products couldn't think of a better way to promote his products? how about more television commercials or ads in magazines? why put nc a&t on front street like that? maybe that's why he's coming back to the nba, because this is the best way he can find to spend his time.

Will someone PLEASE tell me what kind of publicity Michael Jordan's clothing line is supposed to get from THIS kind of stunt? I'm like everybody else...What the...? I mean maybe his advertising execs should get some pointers from
Puff Daddy/Shawn Combs/P. Diddy (or whatever his name is). I think that this was not a good move. It kind of adds some distortion to Michael Jordan's reputation, if you ask me. I hope that they know what they're doing because they (including the famous M.J.) surely look really stupid right about now.

hmmm...
I'm glad I'm not the only one that finds a problem with A&T changing its name. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Why would an already reputable university want to even participate in a stunt of this magnitude? It just doesn't make sense...but hey I guess MONEY TALKS.

Jordan University
It is truly a sad day in America when a University changes its name, or participates in a marketing scheme to suit the whimsy of an athelete, who was a subpar STUDENT in college with a degree in GEOGRAPHY, who is supposedly an absentee father!
Don't misunderstand me, I luv Michael Jordan as much as the next woman, but there are alot more things more important than basketball! Humph!

Kim, girl, I read that link and I STILL don't understand the "name change" even if it was only for one day. I'm trying to understand the reason that Michael Jordan would use a HBCU in order to promote his clothing line. I mean, from what I read, there will be scholarships given on behalf of JORDAN UNIVERSITY, not North Carolina A & T. I can grasp the idea of sponsoring and financially supporting a HBCU. But my thing is why is this being done JUST to promote his clothing line? What ever happened to HUMANITY? They could have ATLEAST made it look as if they were trying to do something productive for the unviersity instead of it being all about money. I mean it's NOT like Michael Jordan NEEDS money. People will buy his stuff regardless. So what's reason? I mean, some of the CONDITIONS of the university receiving the money does not make sense to me. I think North Carolina A & T might have made a serious DUMMY move.
