Princeton Pi Beta Phi Pays for Party damages

Princeton's chapter of Pi Beta Phi has paid a little over $4,000 in damages to the Nottingham Fire Department Ballroom, according to an article in the March 31, 2005 Daily Princetonian. The damages occurred at a March 3 party at the ballroom. According to the article, the party was cosponsored by Beta Theta Pi.

A police detective lieutenant is quoted as saying, "They trashed the place." Reportedly a curtain was damaged in a fire, the floor was damaged, and a case of wine was stolen.

Princeton does not officially recognize fraternities and sororities.

I'm personally not sure what we can learn from this article except that students at the "best" universities can be just as stupid and destructive as students anywhere.

Since it was at a sorority's party, I do remember DeltAlum's occasional observation that some of the damages done in fraternity houses is caused by sorority women. And I know there's been a little discussion of whether sororities ought to "step up to the plate" and not rely entirely on fraternities for parties. In this instance at least it looks like that can be a somewhat costly proposition.

Yep. A costly proposition that is often solely borne by fraternities.

I do appreciate Dean Herbold's (Princeton's) position on dealing with these incidents.

Herbold said University actions would involve the students at the event, not the organizations sponsoring it.

"We treat these things in terms of individuals," Herbold said. "Anytime we find that a student has committed a violation, we treat it on an individual basis. If this did involve a sorority, or any other campus group for that matter, we would still regard this on an individual basis."
