My aunt had a small pearl handled 38 special, my dad owned a 38 too and my uncle, but I have yet to own one, I had a boyfriend in high school whose best friend accidentally got shot by one in the house so it has me a bit skeptical of owning one

My grandma has a .357 and she taught me how to shoot it. Also, my very-thuggish first boyfriend has a glock and a .38 and taught me how to shoot those so that I could protect myself and the (then) babyperson back in my single mom days. Needless to say, Hubby is afraid of me and I do not have my own gun at this time.

What Do You Think of Current Events?
Ladies,
Many of you indicated that you own a gun or would own a gun if possible.
Recently, there have been so many shootings televised on the news. The shooting at the church in Wisconsin, the shooting at the school in Minnesota, the shooting rampage of the guy in Atlanta, the suicide shooting of the guy in Wisconsin who confessed to killing that judge's husband and mother.
Given this, are you for or against the right to bear arms for everyday citizens? Given that you would like to or do own a gun, are you pro-*your* right to bear arms but against the general population's right to bear arms? What I mean is would you feel comfortable with every law abiding person in the country bearing arms? What do you think of the current events wrt the right to bear arms?

No, and don't think I plan to own one anytime soon. They make me nervous.

my husband has talked 'bout getting a gun for the house before but i'm just really against it - mostly because of all the current events and the horror stories that you hear 'bout the gun being turned on the owner.
personally, i carry a collapsable metal rod (kinda like jennifer lopez in out of sight) that i'm just going to assume hurts to get hit with...

NO! I don't own any guns. I don't need a gun in my possession because I would definately use it if need be. So in that case, I rather not have one at all.

I don't think I'll ever own a gun. I'm afraid that I'll shoot out people's tires when they tick me off in ATL's rush hour traffic.
@ SummerChild - Everyone should have the right to bear arms just like we have rights to shoot off at the mouth as we freely express ourselves. In both cases, we're taking risks that anything could go wrong, but I recognize that in the case of guns, lives could be at stake. Well, I'd rather take the risk so that Americans can protect themselves and their families if it's necessary. It's not an everyday thing that people lash out in our neighborhoods or in metro areas, so I don't live in fear each and everyday because there are people with guns. (NOTE: I was in ATL when Brian Nichols was unaccounted for, and those were fearful hours.)

FWIW, every man I know who was in a war zone has said that he has never felt safer than when everyone he was around also had a gun. Sort of like a great equalizer.
But I do feel that we have this great amendment, but we don't teach people - especially child-people - what it really means. It doesn't mean that you can blow the head off anyone you don't like, it means that RESPONSIBLE use of a firearm is a privilege.

After BR Serial Killer...
After the Baton Rouge serial killer my daddy made my momma and I get a 38 and go to the shooting range for training. We both had night classes (especially my momma since she was in graduate school). He's really happy that I have one now since I've relocated to the Houston area.

It is so crazy that I posted this back in 2005 and look at where we are today in 2007 with recent events. I recall a thread wherein folk were arguing for the ability for everyday folk to get guns easily and by law.
What do you guys think now? For or against these bills that are cropping up across the nation?

I own one and will use it if I need to. I keep it locked up and out of sight. My husband goes out of town a lot, so I need to make sure I keep my family safe. Thank God I've never had to use it.

My stance on guns...
I know here in TX they are talking about revising the Gun Laws (this was in the works before the very tragic events that took place at VT). Basically the law before was that you could protect your self/property if an intruder entered your home but as soon as they hit that front door if you shot them then you'd have some 'splaining to do... as I understand it the new changes will allow you to "defend" yourself/family anywhere on your property including the areas outside of your home.
I for one am wary of guns. I had a close friend who shot himself by accident in high school and that really affected my view on guns. I don't know if I could handle it if I took someone's life regardless of the situation. My honeydew says he gonna purchase one and take me to the shooting range after we get married. My Father was in the military but never kept guns in the house, that I know of!?
A male coworker and I had a conversation about this topic earlier this week and he said that if you do decide to carry a weapon, as a female, get something bigger than a 22 caliber weapon. He said that you might as well be throwing rocks at your attacker with a weapon that size unless you shoot them at close range. Now I don't know a lot about guns so someone please correct me if this statement is wrong???

Nope....the chances of me getting to the location where the gun is stored, pulling it out, unlocking it, and then firing it in a timely matter is slim. Not to mention, I could not live with myself if someone ticks me off and I use it.
In regards to the Michigan militia or whomever else who feels the need to purchase 100 guns:
I know it is in our constitution bear arms but, it is not like the Michigan militia or anyone else can raise arms against the United States Military. I think the right to bare arms (back in the day) was to fight off wildlife, Indians, and the British. But today, there is no point in rushing to own a gun. If the US military wants to get your azz, they will. You can't go up against the Apache Helicopter or an unlimited amount of nerve gas...
I know this may sound like an odd statement, but some people just take gun ownership too far. The Civil War was fought a long time ago...please move on.
