Say your in a car accident, and its your fault, so your insurance company has to pay for the damages to both your car, and the other drivers car, so right off the bat the insurance company is involved, but no police report was filed or necessary to be filed, does that mean a point wont appear on your record, or does the insurance company notify the police; or even better can the matter be resolved without the police....anyone know?
I agree, I think you have to file the SR-1 with the DMV when the damages exceed 500...which isn't very hard in most accidents! You do not, however, have to file a police report if you don't want to (and the other party doesn't want to). I think (but I'm not 100% sure) that if someone is injured then you have to file the police report.
I'm not sure if an accident causes a point to appear on your record. I know in some cases the police can cite you for something after an accident. But I was under the impression that only the tickets and stuff put points on your record. As far as I know, accidents are just something your insurance company takes into account when establishing your rates.
I'd guess the insurance company may have to file a report -- but if there is no police involvement and no witnesses questioned, I doubt that any points will be issued. Especially if no ticket or citation of any other kind is given.
