Wink Update on the working out thread/getting bodies in check for the spring/summer

So, how's everyone doing?

Me? My plan is going really well. I get up at 5am and go running for 3 miles before I go to work. This works really well because I'm all pumped up and ready for the day by the time I get in the office. And since Ive started doing that I'm usually in before all of the secerataries......kind of builds up that image to the employees.

After I get off work I go to the gym by 6pm and lift weights. Usually I work out 2 muscles and do 5 or 6 excercises for each muscle. After that I go home and eat because traffic was so bad at 5pm that I didnt eat before the gym.

After I eat dinner and shower off the sweat and grub from earlier I go back at 9:30pm. I swim in the pool for 45 minutes and do laps. After I get done I sit in the sauna for 20 minutes, jump back in the pool for 10 minutes to get refreshed and then go home, shower and go to bed.

I know it sounds like some fucked up poor body image b.s., but it works amazingly. I do the routine Monday-Friday and also on Sunday if I go out Saturday night. Usually I take Saturdays off. Combine that with a good-n-tasty diet of steamed and sometimes raw veggies, chicken breast, steak, imported cheese for snacks, kosher soups, milk, water, green-tea and I can't explain how freaking good I feel. The only time I slip up is when I sometimes drive by taco bell after the gym and I can't control myself. Usually I remember not to drive by it but every now and then it slips my mind and I can't help it. But other than that, it's going really well.

Haha...I love the concise title.

I generally keep up with my routine all year round; the only difference is I don't do the miles running that I do during the warmer months, since running in the snow in Boston is a bother. I've been pretty sick over the past month and a half, and thus have lost a lot in terms of what I can do.

What I try to do is lift 3-4 days a week with 10-15 miles of running mixed in. I'll try to do at least 5 miles at a time at a good pace, more if my knees hold up and my pace is good. Because of a heart issue I have, I also pay attention to my pulse...that has more to do with my cool down though (i.e. if my heart rate isn't calming itself in enough time, something's wrong).

All together, this usually leaves me in solid shape. Right now I've dropped a bit of weight because of being sick, and I'm still not quite back to normal, so I'm trying to ease myself back to normal. Between that, wedding planning and work, it hasn't been going quite as well as I thought. Hopefully I pick it up again and get right back on track.

For me, due to me being a gigantic pussy with patellar tendonitis, I'm really trying to 'round back' into shape than anything. My routine is pretty simple - I hit the gym after work, making sure to get in either running, elliptical, or bike (if I lifted legs) work. I change it up often to alter the tension of the exercise, and generally I do interval work. Every 5 weeks, I'll change it up and go to distance running and swimming for 3 weeks, then back to intervals. I try to go 5 days, generally Sun-Thurs (although I'm trying to get in friday, and take wed/thurs off).

I lift about 4 days a week, depending on soreness and desire, doing at least one day a week of legs work to try to prevent the recurring knee crap that comes from playing hockey growing up. When working upper body, I usually split arms/shoulder and chest/back to get the pushing/pulling tension (as well as crossing over exercises throughout a session) - free weights only to prevent 'nautilus body' soreness in the 'helper' muscles, during swimming especially.

I'm also trying to really extend my stretching routine, although I'm not hitting up the yoga/pilates classes for now.

The dietary issues are pretty much just 'the usual' - trying to limit the 'bad days' to nights out, since liquor is a sunk cost, and drinking plenty of water during the week to prevent dehydration/retention, usually about 1.5 gallons a day.

I bought a pilates DVD and have committed to doing it every other day. Don't know if my poor body could take more than that.

The Working Mom's Workout

I get up at 5:30 am to the howls of my Alaskan Malamute and sprint to the kitchen to feed her before she wakes up the kids, then sprint to the restroom to uhhh.. ya know.

Shower off all that grub from the night sweats (peri menopause ya know!)

Head to the kitchen to work my hands and forearms making lunches and then doing make up, blow drying and curling hair.

Work out the vocal cords trying to get the kids to get up.

Sometimes I do another upper body workout, dragging my son out of bed, but I vary this from day to day.

I work my shoulders and neck while driving to work. I can tell I work them hard while driving because they always hurt when I get there, especially when it's snowing.

1/4 mile walk from my car to my desk, resting only on the elevator, where I exercise my fingers pushing the buttons for everybody who gets on it.

I log about 10,000 steps on a pedometer at work during the day, going from floor to floor and wing to wing to fix people's computer issues, go the cafeteria, vending machines and smoking area.

1/4 mile walk back to the car, followed by another 45 minutes of the shoulder/neck workout.

I do bends, squats and walking with resistance at the grocery store. When I'm lucky, I get to take a break and walk in place while I wait in line at checkout! Then it's more walking with resistance to the car and more bends and squats to put groceries in the car! Neck and shoulder exercises on the way home again, then more bending and squatting, plus walking with weights, up stairs!

I then sprint to the back door to let the dog in and feed her. Then it's more bends and squats to put groceries away. I do a lot of upper body stretching now too. Then come the stairs! Taking extra groceries that don't fit into the cupboard or freezer down the stairs. Since I try to make as few trips as possible, I sometimes do this with 30 lbs of weights! This helps the biceps and the lats!

I exercise my fingers by posting on Greek Chat and then decide it's time to make dinner. This involves more walking, squats and bends along with some upper body stirring. Then I make my son do his "setting the table" workout so his arms get strong and agile.

Next is the jaw workout. It's my favorite, I must admit!

My daughter does her exercises then, clearing dishes so that I can get in my dish washing/drying/putting away lifts.

I get to exercise my mind next while assisting with 3rd and 5th grade homework!

Then I get more steps in while I get the kiddos ready for bed and then, well, I crash, usually exhausted.

I was never this tired when I worked out regularly at the gym! What's up with that????

I try to do 30-45 minutes of cardio 4-6 days a week, either on the elliptical, bike, or treadmill. I prefer running intervals on the treadmill for 3 miles, except I've had stress fractures in my feet so I can't always handle running, and have to do the elliptical or bike instead.

Then lifting - I lift three days a week, either at a class such as Body Pump (its apparently at gyms all over the world, you use a light barbell for an hour) or a similar weightlifting class, or on my own. If I lift on my own, I use dumbbells and stand on a core board for standing exercises, and balance on a stability ball for chest presses, flies, and the like, so that I strengthen my abs and back while I'm lifting. Then I also do crunches and other ab work, lots of it on the stability ball.

Sometimes on my non-lifting days I add yoga or pilates.

ETA: Diet-wise, I eat a lot of whole foods (veggies, salmon and chicken, tons of fruit) and whole-grain carbs (whole-wheat bread if I'm going to have it, whole grain cereal in the morning), scrambled eggs with mozzarella cheese, lowfat yogurt, skim milk, etc. I do have a chocolate weakness.

I just get frustrated because of my body type - I'm an apple shape, so i have skinny arms and legs that tone up easily, but I'm "busty" and my stomach never looks completely flat... even now, when you can count my ribs. I would try to lose weight but I worry about looking gross if my ribs poke out too much! Maybe midriff tops just aren't for me... anyone have any suggestions?

I go to the gym 5x a week year-round:
Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri, Sat
(and I take Wed & Sun off).
It's either Step class with weight (Total Body Conditioning is the name of the class) or Tae-Boxing class.

Now that the weather is getting nice, I'll be doing more hiking:
http://www.grousemountain.com
Hiking that mountain is killer and an awesome workout. It's about a mile and half, but īt's very steep. I can do it in about 50 minutes.

cashmoney, are you showering 2x a day or 3x a day? (once after running, once after weight training, once after the pool?)
If you are showering more than once, then don't forget to use a good skin lotion afterwards. Chlorinated swimming pool water in particular is so drying. (I like Lubriderm or Aveeno).

Busting my ass to get in shape for tubeing season.

Am dedicated to stepping up efforts in the next few months.

Tonight I did back and bicepts and forearms with the trainer.

Then did an hour on the elliptical completing 7 miles.

I will rock eventually.

Have been hitting the gym 4 days a week. Am now going to bump that up to 6 days. Cardo 3 days and strength 3 days. (alternating, of course). Now if I could just lay off the beer....

I have my 12 month assessment next month and it will be interesting to see my progress.

3x a day. I use this hemp lotion some chick got me, it smells really good and chicks like it. But yea, I hate that chlorine smell after I get done swimming. I feel like joker from batman after being dumped in the pool of chemicals.

I don't know what an apple shape is but my suggestion is to not worry about being busty, since straight guys don't complain about that.

I fucked up big time last night. I bought a big bottle of redi-whip....the squirt bottle. I didnt even get home before I broke it out and started squirting the whip cream in my mouth. I felt like that little fat kid I made fun of for eating 2 slices of pizza at the same time the other day at Al's Pizza.
