Fantasy baseball

I think there are quite a few of us here on the board who play fantasy baseball. Have you had your drafts yet? How are your teams looking for this year?

I play but we haven't drafted yet. We're looking for a few more members in the league.

This is my second year.

I did a league with some friends this year and did some random ones on yahoo as well. I somehow ended up with Johan Santana on most of my teams. There aren't many catchers, shortstops, or second baseman to go around.

I suppose I should answer my own question. My draft went well; I didn't get a lot of big names, but my team is solid from top to bottom. We did a live draft on Yahoo and I had the fifth pick in the first round, so I was in the middle of the picks for every round.

Jorge Posada (NYY - C)
Travis Hafner (Cle - 1B)
Mark Loretta (SD - 2B)
Eric Chavez (Oak - 3B)
Michael Young (Tex - SS)
Carlos Beltran (NYM - OF)
Gary Sheffield (NYY - OF)
Aaron Rowand (CWS - OF)
Justin Morneau (Min - 1B)
Brad Wilkerson (Was - 1B,OF)
Juan Uribe (CWS - 2B,3B,SS)
Dallas McPherson (LAA - 3B)
Clint Barmes (Col - 2B,SS)

SP Mark Prior (ChC - SP)
SP Kerry Wood (ChC - SP)
RP G. Mota (Fla - RP)
RP Chad Cordero (Was - RP)
P Odalis Perez (LAD - SP)
P Andy Pettitte (Hou - SP)
P Bronson Arroyo (Bos - SP)
SP Doug Davis (Mil - SP)

Hopefully this is the team that wins it all for me.

Im too lazy to type out all the names of the players, but I will printscreen it...

Your team looks ok, to me it looks like it could go either way... I like my team except for the fact that I didnt get any of the elite players (Pujols, ARod, Vlad, Beltran etc)

Oh and you should get more pitchers, 6 days of the week your bench field players wont be doing anything for you...

Mine is heavily weighted toward BP's PECOTA forcasts for some marginal players - thus, I avoided a lot of high-risk picks and tried to fill in my team with solid characters. Here's the rundown:

C - V. Martinez (his projections are off the charts)
1B - Dunn
2B - Kent
3B - A. Rod (a bit of irony, since my team is ARod's Manicurists)
SS - B. Crosby
OF - M. Cabrera
OF - L. Berkman
OF - JD Drew
UT - P Burrell (he will be the Comeback Player of the Year)
BN - Wily Mo (seriously - he's one hammy injury from exploding)

SP - Pedro
SP - Hudson
RP - Dotel
RP - Julio
P - J. Vazquez
P - Z. Greinke
P - M. Buehrle
BN - Lieber
BN - Pettitte
BN - Penny (a draft-and-follow)

I think my team is extremely strong, except for the RP - I figure I can pick up a closer later, depending on which mid-market team moves up (or when Ugueth gets traded to the Mets, or Mesa dies). I've traded a little upside (excepting Crosby and Greinke) for solid players in good situations - Pedro in a monster pitcher's park, Hudson with Mazzone, Berkman playing on the moon. My only injury risks are the two Dodgers, and Kent has been the most consistent 2B over the last 4 years and projects really well, even in Chavez Ravine (huge avg boost to offset the power decline, and more doubles to support slg).

God Bless Fantasy Baseball.

It sounds like you went a lot the same way I did...I'm looking at guys like Rowand and Morneau to have big years. I'm hoping Beltran doesn't flake out in NY and that Chavez stays healthy for a full season. I got Loretta kind of early, but the drop-off at the 2-bag is steep after the top 10 or so. Hafner was a late-round pick, but if he's as good as he was last year he's a top-tier first baseman.

I really wanted Martinez, but he went early in the draft; that's what happens when you have other people who actually know baseball. Posada really sketches me out, especially since walks and OPS don't count much in my league. Prior and Wood are injury risks, but if healthy they'll be a good 1-2 combo in my rotation.

I got Mota mid-draft and Davis after the draft (had second thoughts about Kevin Brown), so I'm hoping that they end up as steals.

Really I just went for the most value possible; I didn't reach too far on any of the picks, and tried to shore up the weaker positions (2b especially) early in the process.
