College of Human Sciences

With a name like that you would assume it would include anthropology, sociology, women's studies, poli sci, African American studies, American Indian studies, etc.

But it doesnt.

Damn we got some stoopid faculty working on this name change.

Don't they call that College of Social Science?

Human Sciences as a field of study was established inthe late 19th century. Its purpose was to address human needs by applyingscientific principles to solve the practical problems of everydaylife. What makes the College of Human Sciences at Auburn University(CHS@AU) unique today comes out of that same tradition of putting "people first" and integrating science-based skills with human-based values. Indeed, it is pursuing Science for a Quality Life.

When you think about it, the majors do have things in common.

It's the proposed name (which just passed by one vote, apparently) of the new college at Iowa State which will combine the college of Family and Consumer Sciences and the college of Education in order to cut spending.

Some majors are:
Early Childhood Education
Elementary Education
Secondary Education
Health and Human Performance
Apparel and Merchandising
Home Economics
Hotel and Restaurant Management
Textiles and Clothing
Human Development and Family Studies

Personally, I think they're losing more academically than gaining financially by combining the two colleges, but that's already been decided.

For me I think that a university-wide consideration of department groupings for colleges should be considered. There are a few departments here and there that would seem more appropriate in a different college (Comp Sci is LAS when it seems more logical to be placed in Engineering)

The best name anyone I have talked to has suggested:

The College of Not-Ag-Not-Business-Not-Design-Not-Engineering-Not-LAS-Not-VetMed

Don't ask me why but when I saw the heading for this thread, it reminded me of those ads on the subway for non-acredited schools offering social work-related courses that people try to pass off as having a real Master's degree from but it is so not.

Yeah...it's pretty much Interior Design, but with more space discussions and more structures classes. There are only a handful of schools with Interior Architecture programs.

It seems really random to me to put Interior Design/Architecture in the College of Human Sciences if there's a school of Architecture.

Nah, Comp Sci is too light to be in Engineering. You have to have something still kind of tech-y for those who can't hack it in the Enginerding school.

Plus, strictly speaking, comp sci and computer systems engineering are different fields of study, and while they share resources, combining them would be like combining chemistry and chemical engineering, in a sense.
