Ummm, that's kind of a silly excuse. Varsity teams turn down people who aren't good enough, as do theatre productions, etc. I think that's kind of a lame excuse, as are rules about gender. Some schools who aren't GLO-friendly use the gender excuse, yet have single gender residences.

I know its a silly excuse. Carleton backs up Varsity sports by saying that they can judge on athletic ability and thus are able to turn them down and that there are intermurals to participate in. They also say the same thing about theatre productions-natural acting talent..so basically we have no excuse according to them to ever turn someone way-its just plain discriminating.
