Exclamation Breach of Chapter

When I was an active, there were a few things that were absolutely taboo. One of them was breach of chapter. This was when the proceedings of a chapter meeting were disclosed to anyone who wasn't a brother. The only exceptions were things announced in the portion of chapter devoted to announcements, and information that was made public with the consent of the chapter.

Does anyone else have similar rules?

Tri Sigma's chapter meeting is closed to non-sisters. Any chapter who needs to give us info about any event can call us or stop by our house.

Kappa Phi is entirely different since we're open membership. We're actually encouraged to bring interested women to our chapter meetings and let them see what we're all about.

Obviously our formal meetings are closed to anyone who is not a sister, but our regular meetings are open to guests of sisters as long as they notify the chapter President.

Definitely have to make sure nothing that will get people's panties in a twist gets brought up though. But that's why we have sisters get the President's approval.

During our formal chapter meetings, only lifetime members are allowed to be present for our opening and closing ritual. Before our new members are initiated, they wait outside with our VP- Education and then are allowed in for the business part and then leave before we close. Guests making announcements are invited to stop by and have to wait outside until the Warden lets them in.

With the exception of formal meetings, our meetings were open to anyone. We encourage men or women to attend the meetings in order to see what goes on within our walls. Our greek advisor comes often as well as people who give information on an organizations event. Also, the student body officer candidates come and give their speeches at our meeting.

Meetings were closed to nonactive members of said chapter. I believe, someone correct me if I am wrong, that alumnae and even our advisors asked permission of the president to attend. Our new members attended an “all house meeting” the week before initiation and any guests who wished to speak at out meetings came at the end at a specified time and would wait until brought in to speak.

So no one was ever supposed to speak about or discuss what went on during meetings outside of the meeting. We even never talked about the length of our meetings, especially membership meetings.

Alpha Sigma Phi has a similar rule. The internal business of the chapter is not privy to outsiders, and members are obligated to maintain silence regarding the transactions of the chapter (except for announcements or other information that is considered public information) when in the presence of non-members.

Only actives or alumni are allowed to attend our business meetings. Pledge Training and Business Meetings are held at the same time in seperate locations. When they are finished we meet together for a joint chapter. Anything that is said in the business meeting is privy only to initiated brothers of the fraternity. Chapter is only for pledges, actives, and alumni.

For Prospectives, we have other things we do during the week that are open for anyone to come to.

AOII's meeting are closed to non-members and new members are excused if anything is to be discussed that they cannot hear. At Ole Miss, ofther sororities and fraternities do not stop in during chapter, they come during chapter dinner and just come and say what they gotta say. I am guessing alumnae are allowed to attend since I know I have to be at all chapter meetings and if I cannot attend then I let someone on my AAC know so they can go for me.

At Ball State visitors could schedule to talk to our chapter at what we called "Pre-Chapter", we would tell them to be there promptly by six, and would not start our chapter meeting until after they had left. If they weren't there on time, so sorry, they would have to come back another week. Pretty much everyone did it the same way (at least back then). Only actives and alumni could attend formal chapter (the vast majority of our chapter meetings are formal).

my chapter's meetings are open to our alumni and active members. Exec is exec only, then once they are finished, the all chapter meeting starts. All announcements from other chapters are usually covered in the Panhel report, but we've had members of other chapters come before our all chapter meeting starts (I think).

This goes for our whole organization, but anything discussed during meetings is not for anyone else to know and is not talked about. This especially concerns pros and cons for elections and voting on girls during rush. Our formal meetings are closed to everyone except initiated sisters. Informal meetings are open to pledges and people from other organizations who want to come by and make an announcement.

In my chapter at Ball State, visitors come during informal meetings, and usually at the beginning of chapter. The only people there during formal are the active members.

Breach of Chapter

DU is a little different , no rule exists making chapter meetings private. Chapter meetings tended to be just for members simply because no one else had a need to attend.
In a related matter We had a good tradition of making initiations open to the parents of the pledges invited guests and top rushees. The Texas Chapter always held initiations in the Texas State Senate Chambers in Austin, this tradition started in 1949 when the chapter was installed, every time we used the chamber and cloak room we had to get permission from the Lt. Gov's. office and the Sgt. at Arms Office. Parents and invited guests enjoyed the initiation, we aways had a speaker, usually a prominent alum or member of the international staff.
Afterwards we went back to the chapter house for a meal.

If you ain't AXD, you ain't coming to our chapter meeting. New members have to wait until after opening ritual before they can come in.

General announcements like stuff for Greek Week, etc. can be disclosed to non-members. Other than that, it stays in the chapter.
