Say No to Ponchos
I am firmly anti-poncho. This article is so funny, and it sums up my view entirely.
Is That a Real Poncho?
The hideous new trend afflicting America.
By Amanda Fortini
Fashion crimes, like many other crimes, begin innocently enough. A few influential designers send a quirky and impractical article of clothing down the runway; high-fashion magazines enthusiastically push it; a celebrity is photographed wearing it; lower-end lines begin mass-producing it; suddenly, women are buying it in shrieking colors and synthetic fabrics, and what started as a harmless act of whimsy has become a widespread aesthetic offense. So it has gone with the poncho—that rectangular piece of material resembling a small blanket, with a hole in the center for your head. The style, now at its apogee, appears both in mainstream stores like Ann Taylor, the Gap, J.C. Penney, and Macy's (which offers 43 options in a ponchos-only department) and in high fashion magazines like Vogue, in which New York socialite Plum Sykes sports a fringed, yellow, off-the-shoulder number, and Bazaar, where a $1,500 Chloe "horse blanket poncho" is deemed one of the season's "must-haves." Recently, during a 20-minute walk in Midtown Manhattan, I counted 18 ponchos—averaging nearly one per minute. Ponchos have become this season's Ugg boots: unsightly and overexposed.

BEST ARTICLE EVER.
Once you let the ponchos in, the gauchos follow, and I KNOW no thirty-something wants to ever see another pair of gauchos.

The rain boots trend is STUPID as well. WTF? It's 60 and sunny outside and you're wearing galoshes?!

I actually got one for my birthday a couple weeks ago from my mom. It's okay to wear every once in awhile, but unlike some people I know, I don't sport them in every color, pattern and fabric, and also to match my outfit underneath. I guess this is how trends go. I used to think those UGG boots were cool but told myself to hold off a bit before purchasing. Boy am I glad I did. Even this season you see New Yorkers on every street corner wearing those. I guess that's what happens when they begin selling the cheaper knock-offs at Old Navy.

OMG YES! No ponchos, no UGG boots. Please also no chinese slippers (I'm sorry but houseslippers were not meant to be worn outside of the house) and any shirts that say things like "Mrs. Pitt" or "I partied with Justin".

That's so funny. All the tourists in NYC wanna buy those in Chinatown. I got a pair once and they fell apart just walking around INSIDE my house. I know someone who has a cousin in like Idaho or somewhere (no offense Idaho people) and they ask her to send them in bulk because they love 'em out there. I think the Chinese are laughing at those of us who waste our money on them.

I wore ponchos when I was 11. My daughter is almost 11 and is wearing ponchos now. They are for 11 year olds...

AGREED. Ponchos did not need to come back. Do they flatter anyone?

Lol. I wore my poncho when I was 5 and have no urge to revisit that fashion trend again.

OMG, where is the anti-poncho queen Aurora_Borealis (sp?). She would definitely agree with this.

It's like the 1970s all over again with Chinese sleepers and ponchos.

I'm glad that I have allies. They are hard to come by in SoCal. The funny thing is I did a bit of online browsing and saw the Macy's Poncho section. That's when I knew I had had enough of this trend.
**I have pink chinese mesh slippers, and they are indoor wear only**
