Only as a last resort. The prospective patient should have proof that they have tried every single diet known to man and what results came of the diets, family history of some sort of disease related to or made worse by obesity, and all possible outcomes of surgery should be outlined to the hilt. A surgery like this shouldn't be done as routinely as it is, I believe.

i considered it for a millasecond. when i actually started losing weight by doing normal things like limiting my calorie intake and getting exercise, i decided it was a worthless surgery to go through unless you currently weight over 500lbs.
now trust me, i'd love to just go under the knife and be able to drop over a hundred lbs, but i'd rather say i lost that weight through hard work.

In the right situation I think it is a good thing to have done. Like what was said previously, if nothing else has worked, then it should be considered. Also some families just have the genetic history that diet and exercise won't necessarily work. I think the person should also be relatively healthy, besides the weight, before having it done. There can be way too many complications if the person has High blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, etc.
