Do you serve on a board?
Do any of you serve on any boards now that you're out of school?

On the board for my fraternity's Chicago Alumni Association...
But the reason I asked is because I'm being asked to join a more established philanthropic group as a board member and the way they make it sound is that there are wine tastings and all I have to do is show up. I'm not stupid. I know it's never like that and I was trying to gauge how much work people put into these organizations if they join the board.

Hmm...that I don't know.
There's a philanthropic group here in Charlotte that I do things with, and I actually know one of the board members and have met 2 others. I asked the one lady what she does for a living, and she replied, "I'm on the board!"
Also, one of my attys here at work is on a board, and he runs around for them quite a bit, and we get a ton of correspondence through here (office) for their stuff. Our secretary ends up taking care of the minutes, etc.

I've sat on a number of boards -- professional, social and fraternal.
The experiences have run everywhere from a lot of fun to a total pain.
One thing to consider is that there can be some hidden costs involved -- for instance those luncheon meetings for which members are expected to pay out of their own pocket. Depending on the board and where they meet, those can add up.
Also, again depending on the kind of board, be sure that the organization insures its board members from potential lawsuits, etc.
I guess I would advise to talk to former and present members of any board you're invited to join and be sure you know what the real story is.

It depends on the organization, but it came as a shock to me those many years ago when I went to the first meeting and had to pay for a lovely selection of cold cuts, soda and part of the room rental since the organization was a not-for-profit.
