Unhappy That Scary Evil Word

Has anyone ever seen a disaffliation (I am not... but it might happen in our chapter) and I was curious what happens

Yes, a few unfortunately. However, I'm not sure specifically what you are asking.

Unfortunately we had one last semester, one of my pledge sisters

I'm not sure if there's really anything that 'happens'.. She read her letter at a meeting, turned in her badge, and walked out. And there's paperwork you have to send into Nationals.

I hope it doesn't have to happen in your chapter, for us it was really hard on everyone. But in the end I think our being there for each other did bring us closer.

In my four years of being active, I watched many of our sisters disaffliate. Whether she is being forced to leave (not paying dues, unsisterly-like conduct, etc) or leaving on her own, remember she was a sister and don't treat her horribly after the incident occurs. I've seen it happen, and it can get really ugly.

I wish your chapter the best of luck with everything.

ditto to what Jadey said.

We always have a couple each year due to dues not being paid. It really is hard on both sides since the women do want to be members but just can't afford it!

i don't think that we've had anyone dissaffliate because they couldn't afford it... we've had people not be initiated because of it tho!!

we've had people dissaffliate for more personal reasons, all on their own accord. none by force.

it's a really hard thing to go thru. especially when you're close with them. i was close to two girls that were founders with me... we went thru a lot of shit together... and they both dissaffliated a year after we chartered. it broke my heart.

and i agree 100% with what jadey said, don't treat them horribly. of course things are going to be different... but they're still the same person, just without your letters.

Yeah, well it is hard because we are really close. I won't treat badly because we are still good friends. It is just going to be hell on our chapter. No one has disaffliated for 4 years and no one has ever been kicked out. So some aren't even sure what id going to happen

Disafiliation isn't a big thing here. All we do is sign paperwork if you decide to disafiliate, nothing else. Sometimes I think my chapter misses out on some things. Are we supposed to have them hand back in their badge, etc?

HI Strawberry,

Actually you are supposed to have the member turn back in all their Phi Sig stuff. The Badge, Membership Certificate and new member pin are supposed to be sent back to Headquarters with the disaffiliation paperwork.

As for the other Phi Sig items such as shirts, etc. From what I understand the thinking is that the Greek Letters belong to Phi Sigma Sigma and if you are willing to disafilliate from it the organization representing those letters then the things you "owned" no longer belong to you.

yep. plus, i'd be really pissed if i saw someone who's dissaffliated wearing a shirt with my letters on it!

i understand that these girls would want to keep something to "remember" it all by, but they decided to leave, so they can give up their letters... the letters obviously didn't mean anything to them to begin with - or they wouldn't have disaffliated...

(sorry for sounding bitchy, but this is a sore subject for me right now)

We've had a few disaffiliates in my time.... (that's AWESOME that yoru chapter hasn't had that many) and if they leave peacefully without drama then it's no big deal you just see them less.

You are supposed to turn in your badge and certificate, tHe thing is though that the "stuff" they paid for... One thing we did is offer to buy it back from them... then we raffled it off to sisters who wanted it... that way they got paid back for it.

sometimes is hard to get the girls to even meet up with us (we are a commuter school), like we have one girl trying to avoid us by all means, and we can't even get her paperwork signed, how are we supposed to get her to give us back her stuff? lol

Sometimes I've seen disaffiliation happen because the sister was no longer able to deal with the chapter and was not eligible for alumni status. I have seen it considered during an absolutely horrendous year but it wasn't because the women wanted to leave Phi Sig they wanted to leave the chapter itself.

i understand about being a commuter school. its hard trying to get people to do anything at all. ive seen sisters disaffilate themselves, i sat on the j-board for them, and then ive seen the sisters who act like they are because they never come to anything.
