Post What is/has your organization DONE.....

Everyone keeps asking "what is xyz sorority like on your campus" or "what do you think of abc fraternity"..........

I think the more important question is "what is your organization (your chapter in particular) DOING!!!" Christmas break is right around the corner and I would like to know what everyone has done (or is planning to do) with regards to their communities, fundraising, programs.....

My sorority just finished having a whole week of events to celebrate my chapter's one year anniversary on campus. Here were our events:

--"Did your plans fall through? Did you switch your major and now you don't know what to do?: This was an event led by an academic advisor on what students should do if they change their majors, etc. It also talked about grad school plans as well (that often gets changed as well if you change your undergrad major w/ plans to get a MA in that field)
--Safe Sex and HIV/AIDS awareness workshop
--We brought speaker David Lamb from New York. He wrote a book about the relations b/t blacks and latinos and the relationship of hip hop culture between those groups. He was fantastic!
--We had a movie dialogue. We watched Higher Learning and then discussed some of the major issues the movie brought up. We talked about how they were relevant on our campus and what we can do to make some changes about it
--our last event was a "Bridging the Gap" mixer. We also had an acapella group and a dance group perform in the middle of it.

The whole week was excellent. Prior to this month, my sorority had a Greek Mixer for all the minority greeks to come together and meet. We also had a Domestic Violence/Abuse workshop. September was also another eventful month...we had a whole week of events for our Rush. We've been quite busy!!! For December, we're just going to relax b/c we need to get ready for the next semester. But that's what we've been doing.

oh!!! Prettygirl, we both know this topic will probably not get too much love, given the seriousnes of it and the fact that some people might have to re-evaluate themselves and their reasons to go greek. It is not easy to look in the mirror and recognize your mistakes. I am glad you and others have taken the time to reply. Thank you-
to my SORHOR who started the topic, you know how this goes but, don't forget our mission-GREATER SERVICE, GREATER PROGRESS.
EEEEEEEIIIIYYYP!!!! Oh!!!! And MADD love to MY NUPES of Queens Alumni chapter, they are doing BEAUTIFUL contribution EVERY Saturday. ALSO MADD LOVE TO ALL FELLOW GREEKS HOLDING IT DOWN AND MAKING OUR FOUNDERS PROUD!!!!! One more thing, I was looking at a book in which people and orgs. that have donated to the agency I work for are listed and... WAS VERY SAD to see only AKA and SIGMA GAMMA RHO donated to such a good cause. COME'on people- MAKE IT HAPPEN-

Great work out there from these responses - I guess everyone knows how I feel about "whats your chapter like...blahblahblah"

The chapter I advise is doing a roadblock to raise money for Easter Seals in January. Its a lot of fun because they literally go and stop traffic to raise money for this organization. In the spring we have our annual golf tournament which brings in money for Easter Seals and the local domestic violence shelter. And throughout the year we volunteer at the shelter to offer babysitting services, help clean up the property, etc. At Christmas, because our chapter is at a suitcase college and everyone (I mean EVERYONE disappears), we donate money to provide families in need with a meal and gifts. I am also in the process of organizing a fixed schedule between both the collegiate and alumnae chapters to provide services to the shelter on a weekly basis. If anyone has any ideas towards helping organize this, PLEASE email me - I'd love to hear some thoughts and ideas regarding this project.

Keep up the good work!

Hey, just like yall I was waiting to see how many people would respond. Everyone boasts about how much their organization does for the community, so nows the time to share!

Here's my spiel (sp?)....
Between my undergrad and grad chapter (sorry, I just cant let go) here are just a few of the things we've done (or plan to do) before closing out 2000:
*muchas fundraising!!!!! Its kinda hard to pull off decent programs or give out scholarships without funds, so we been to tv tapings, had a picture booth at the school's block party, raffles.........you name it!
*the chapter (and individual members) donated money to Steve Harvey's "Feed My Flock" program here in L.A (the goal is to feed 3000 families for thanksgiving).
*We will be feeding the homeless in dowtown LA for thanksgiving.
*Next month with the Society of the Muses, we will be xmas caroling at various, group homes, hospitals, convelescent homes... for those that may need a little extra xmas cheer!
*in december we will be working with Habitat to build a home

the list goes on and on!!

Well its been a whole day and what is this the seventh response. COME ON PEOPLE REPRESENT!! I am not in a greek org but I have been helping out my org of choice and doing things on my own. With the org I have collected and donated money to breast cancer and we all participated in the walk that they had in our area. We had a food drive and we collected food for the needy and we donated to their unofficial bro. org that holds a thanksgiving dinner for the needy each year. I(with them) collected clothes(I myself donated a huge bag from my skinny days ) then we distributed them to the women shelter. I tutor kids after school, and volunteer at family fun nights(which a small fair held at schools around here), on field trips and I help coach the pee wee league baksetball at the ymca on Saturdays.

You know if a topic such as this has a low response then most of the other topics do not even matter. In all my studying of greeks and greek life, especially Bglos I know they were founded for the upliftment of the community through public service. Therefore if no one can come on here and tell us how they are uplifting then whats the dam point of being apart of it. Furthermore why waste your breath talking about who is the best, or who should or should not join based on race and "quality"? I mean if people can not tell us or do not tell us what they do to uplift then hell we know one thing, whether their greek org is the biggest or the best in their comm or on their college campus, its certaintly not because of something they are doing, so they should not have much to say about anything regarding their org. Sorry so long thats my $1,000 dollar contribution

Since my sorority's founders based us out of a love for music, we primarily focus our attention on the College of Music and music programs in local primary and secondary schools. Some things we have done this year:

*sponsor and mostly run local and state Solo-Ensemble competitions, band competitions, etc.
*provide scholarships to college students and grants for non-collegiates to pay for private lessons, go to camps, etc.
*Donate money to keep struggling depts. alive
*volunteer at the local nursing homes
*Christmas caroling
*Volunteer ushering for events on campus
*Bring elementary students to campus for a day and show them why music an important part of life
*Volunteer at local schools who often can't afford to have full time arts teachers there to help with plays, music events, etc.
*Food drives for the local needy
*etc.

As a very small sorority, we don't have much money, so most of our efforts are focused on what we can do, rather than how much $ we can give.

Ginger

So far this semester we have done-

Adopt a Highway, we maintain a 2 mile stretch of highway
Habitat for Humanity, every sunday we send 5-10 brothers to work on the project at hand.
Most importantly is the Lambda Chi Alpha American Food Drive. Our chapter raised over 25,000 pounds of food for charity. This is a nationwide LXA project which I believe is the largest philantrophic project currently being done. It was fun and makes you feel good that you help to improve the lives of others.

I thought about this posting all weekend long. It has put me to think. Wednesday night I helped these high rollers(meaning guys I know who have crazy money and I persuaded to) deliver dinner and turkeys to needed families in Harlem. I did that from 5:30pm to 8pm then went to a function
Kappa Alpha Psi held. Did not get home until 4am BUT... Got up at 8am to help the brothers of Omega Psi Phi feed the homeless of Harlem and Washington Heights. While I got up early to help the Omegas, the Nupes I had party with all night got up even earlier to feed the homeless in Queens, NY.
I was sooo happy to see us make our founders proud. It also made me realize that sometime we do not do as much as we could and should. I also want to thanks all the SORHORS who helped, the Ladies of ZETA PHI BETA Sorority, Inc. as well as DELTA SIGMA THETA Sorority, Inc. for coming out. We had a great time serving the food and preparing everything. I hoped to see a few members of all orgs. but I rather think they were doing their own separate service as
KAPPA ALPHA PSI Fraternity, Inc. did. For real people, I think we understimate our power to change people's lifes. Even if for a day or their entire lifes.
THANKS TO ALL GREEKS, NPHC and ALL GLO DOING GOOD THINGS-

Keep MAKING IT HAPPEN- the BEST way you know-Tru GREATER SERVICE, GREATER PROGRESS.

The chapter I pledged re-started their big philanthropy with TKE this semester, IthacAid 10, which is a big concert/variety show that benefitted the Special Olympics. In the alumnae chapter I joined, they just volunteered to hand out water/cheer on the runners in the NYC Marathon. We also just had a social event at Our Name is Mud, a place where you paint on pottery and they bake it for you. It's great!
