Arnold's speech

What did some of you think about it? I thought it was good...better than Laura Bush's.

I think he said some things about the USA that only an immigrant could say. That we're a source of hope, etc. for the world's oppressed people. I think he came across very well. He's doing a kickass job in Cali from what I understand -- or at least he's light years better than his predecessor. For once, I think a "star" is using his celebrity power for the forces of good an not evil

I thought he gave a great speech, with a lot of good points (he turned out to be a better speaker than I expected). Unfortunately, I fell asleep before Laura Bush's so I cannot comment on hers.

I liked the point where he tried to get audience sympathy because the Soviets harassed his nazi father.

Thumbs up

I liked the fact that he didn't back off of calling folks................. ECONOMIC GIRLIE MEN!

I also like the fact that the Republicans show all facets of the party..not just the conservative side...

Arnold's father did volunteer for the Nazi party SA and became an officer. It's hard to know what his intentions were with the climate in Austria after the German occupation began.

As I posted in another thread:

Arnold has fully accepted the role of his father and has gone above and beyond what is necessary to make up for it. He has won awards from Jewish organizations and the State of Israel for his actions - even fringe Jewish rightist groups have commended him.

Arnold is a Republican. He is a man who overcame great odds as an immigrant with little skills other than knowing how to work out to become famous in acting, grow a large financial empire, and later become governor of California. He is a man that has appealed to many diverse groups. Arnold is not his father; Arnold is a Republican.

Back on topic...

I'm not a big fan of Arnold's, but he surprised me last night. Arnold had a great speech, a great delivery, and all & all, did a great job.

It will be a while before I make fun of him again!

In retrospect, I would have scheduled Laura before Arnold. Her speech was anti-climatic in comparison (yet good, in a wifely way).

I agree 100%. It's just factually true that his dad WAS a Nazi. And as I said, no one here can say anything about what it was like to live in Austria during the occupation. It may have been all but compulsory if he wanted his family to have a safe lifestyle.

This is the same type of out of the blue slander that some have been using.. e.g. Bush's grandfather, Prescott Bush banked in a bank that Hitler used. Karl Rove's father had some role in helping construct at least one concentration camp. It has as much to do with today's election as you do with your cousin's spouse's uncle's former roommate's auto mechanic. (nothing)

Back in those days many people joined the NSDAP (NazionalSozialistiche Deutscher ArbeiterPartei - 'National-Socialist German Workers Party' - it was rarely called by the abbreviation 'Nazi' within Germany) as 'card-carrying' members who rarely participated in party activities. So much so that the party issued two types of membership badges: those who joined before January 30, 1933 and who held party membership numbers less than 500,000 wore badges with a gold wreath around the basic NSDAP badge. (There were exceptions to this rule, though; Hitler did award the golden party badge to some high-ranking Nazi officials who joined the party after 1933.) The 'old fighters' (Alter Kaempfer) were also entitled to wear a chevron on the upper right sleeve of their SA/SS uniforms. The Old Fighters tended to look at the newer members with disdain, calling them 'March Violets'.

Patton caught a lot of flak* for comparing membership in the NSDAP to being a Democrat or Republican in the United States. Obviously the wrong analogy.

(*Another term originating from a German abbreviation: FLiegerAbwehrKanone (anti-aircraft artillery).)

I was surprised and impressed by his speech. I never took him seriously as a politician before, but he did a really great job last night.

i was very impressed with Arnold. i am really starting to take him seriously now.

what i love is that his wife, Maria, is always behind her husband and supporting him. she is from a strong Democratic family, yet that have so much love and respect for each other. i admire the two of them together

I could see him bouncing ideas off her every now and then to see what she thinks the Cali-crazies would go for or not go for.
