Gambling-
So has anyone been gambling?
Did you enjoy it?
Win or lose?
Does your religion say you shouldn't gamble?
Does it bother you if other people do?
I ask because I am Catholic- and my family goes to Caesars in Indiana to gamble together. We've also gone to Vegas, Tunica, Biloxi, etc. It's fun and we do it for the entertainment value. Anyway, I was gambling this past weekend (and I won) and we got to talking about religion and this guy next to me was saying it annoyed him how there was so much booze at the boat, he doesn't drink because he is Southern Baptist and it is against his religion- and I before I could think I popped out with
"Then what the hell are you doing here?" He looked stunned and I continued "You aren't supposed to gamble, are you? Well really!"
I MEAN POT=KETTLE WTF?
So it got me thinking about people gambling and others thoughts of it.
I never thought people would look at me and say "She's going to hell- she gambles!" BUt i guess there are people out there that believe that. It just never occured to me until last night.

Yes, I gamble (frequently you could say). In fact I'm going to Vegas this weekend. I wouldn't do it if I didn't enjoy it. I usually win or break even. It doesn't really bother me if I lose - I only take what I can afford to lose. To me it is just like any other form of entertainment (I pay to do it) with the added bonus that I may bring home some extra cash!
I suppose technically somewhere in the Bible it says not to gamble so I guess it is against my religion, but I've never been to church where the Priest says "though shalt not gamble" (I'm Episcopalian if you are wondering).
I actually applaud you for saying that to the guy. If I had a $1.00 for everytime I have wanted to say that to my Mother In-law (she says I'm going to hell because I drink - which is NOT against my religion by the way - yet she sits there and drinks and gambles at the casinos every opportunity she gets
By the way, how did he answer that - after he recovered from being shocked

I bet on football and basketball games and horse racing. I've never felt bad about it, I've never lost big (usually because I don't bet too big) and it always makes the games more fun to watch when something is riding on it. I'm not religious so that's not an issue...

I gamble rarely... the occasional purchase of a lottery ticket, participation in a football pool or trip to Vegas or some other casino destination is solely for a little entertainment. If I've got the money to play, I'll play.
Granted, I used to live in Las Vegas and my younger brother still works in the casino industry there, but it doesn't take very long to hardly pay attention to the existence of slot and video poker machines everywhere.
What's really funny is that these Bible-thumping evangelicals grouse about Las Vegas being a 'den of iniquity' and that gambling, drinking and carousing is a mortal sin, yet I see these hypocritical, self-righteous pricks (for lack of a better word) partying their asses off at the nearest casino.

He just looked at me appalled and said, "Well, gambling isnt really a sin,its just frowned upon because of the guards and Jesus"
then we started talking about Catholics and I always have to get annoyed when people talk about my religion and make upsurd assumptions.
I have no qualms about saying what I think= the dealer almost burst out laughing though.

How is it against Christianity to gamble? I've not yet had someone be able to offer me a quote out of the Bible that directly condemns gambling.
In fact, didn't the apostles cast lots to determine who would replace Judas?

In Hawaii it's illegal for any kind of gambling to take place. We have no casinos, lottery, etc.
As a kid and even now I'd go to cockfighting derbys with my uncles. It's a gruesome thing to watch, but if you know which chicken to put your $$$ on, you can win some major bucks.
And don't even get me started on football games.

I have never been to the gambling boats. I need to get out there!!!
Now, I'm kinda a southern Baptist - but not the crazy kind. Ya know? Like the group in whatever South Carolina that has built a Christ like city to filter out the gays, the other religions, and alcohol and such.
My churches have always been very Say it Proud and Loud, all gospel like. But....... its not like "if you smoke, you go to hell", "If you do this or that, you're going to hell".
IMHO - you should have said what you did. I mean, he's kinda forgetting what he's doing if he's stating it like that.
