Thumbs up Poll time for the fellas...

I'm doing a project for a class on feminism and sexuality, and I need to know a little bit about the male perspective on feminism. So here we go... Guys, do you feel threatened by feminism? Do you feel feminism has any impact on you? How would you define feminism? Thanks for all your help, and oh! BE HONEST!!! Please and Thank you. If you don't feel comfortable posting your comments here, please e-mail me.

Alpha Sigma love and mine,

Amanda

Cool

I don't feel threatened. I think that feminism is good in that it wants to make men and women equal. I don't understand why some hate all men, but i don't think that has to with them being feminists. I believe in equality for everyone and try to treat everyone as my equal.

Sweet when is it? If I had a car here I would.

I think that drinking guy got banned. I don't know why though, nothing he said was intentionaly offensive I don't think.

I don't know why some people hypenate their names... I suppose maybe to preserve their family name, if there are no males in the family to carry down the name, I guess.

Yeah, I would be curious to see drinknNole's comments too!

LOL, this has nothing to do with your poll, but I'm getting married in 6 months and thought I 'might' be able to shed some light on the name issue.

I don't plan to hyphenate, but I do plan on having 4 names: first name, middle name, maiden name, Husband's last name.

For me it's more of a 'identity' issue. I have a brother to carry on the family name, but my last name is just as much a part of who I am as it is for my brother, my Future Husband, my parents . . . and anyone else. I don't want to give up that part of me. If we look at the origin of WHY women changed their name to their husbands--we'll find that it was because the 'ownership' of the woman changed from her father to her husband. She was property. Today that is all lost (at least in the US in most cases), however, women still carry the last name of their fathers and husbands because it's still 'expected' of them. I personally have chosen to keep my maiden name a part of my name because it represents a part of me, and even though I will always be 'me', I still want it to show. I'm also taking my FH's last name because it's a part of me as well (now) and I want to show that part of me to the world as well.

Does that make sense?

Another thought, would you sacrifice your last name to take your Wife's last name? If not, why? Heredity, family, background--they all mean as much to her as it does to you. Why should she be expected to give up her name in the 21st century just to continue to preserve the archaic 'proporty' tradion? Just food for thought.

I think it would be cool to have a hyphenated name because my last name doesn't flow to well with very many first names, and it might give my kids more flexability.

Hey Mikki,

I see your reasoning. Yeah, it makes sense to me. I didnt even see it that way. I'm not sure if I would change my name if I was put in that circumstance. I guess I'd have to decide when the time was right if I was to do it or not. Most likely I wouldnt, but thats just me. I guess because I feel funny about it, but I have total respect for your reasoning.

I have a friend who both she and her husband hyphenated their names when they got married.

As for me, personally, I am keeping my name. Yeah there are arguments for and against, and none are invalid.

I love my name, its who I've been for 31 (plus since there's no plan to get merried anytime soon! ha ha) years. Love, Marriage and Partnership is about many things, but none of it involves giving up your identity.

I agree with Billy. Women and Men should be treated equally. I dont understand why some hate all men either. This might be off topic but I dont understand why some(including those that are catholic) have to go with the hyphenated names. I think its silly, but thats just my opinion. Whatever floats their boat.

Kevin
