i was wondering what were some good sites to download music from? whether you pay or it's for "free". i'm just worried about downloading files that have viruses.

I've never heard of an MP3 that had a virus.
Just don't run anything with a .exe extension on it if you don't know what it is.

Winmx is pretty good. Whatever you do, do not share your files...otherwise, well...

What about Ruckus? All you need is an .edu web address through your school and you can download music (whole albums) for free! no viruses or anything, however you do have to use the Ruckus player in order to play the things, but you can rip to devices which is good.
just a thought

I've been using AresLite for years now and it's never given me any problems. No spam or pop-ups, which is great.
The downside is that you may not always get the link to download because the user might have turned off the option to share, so it'll say 'Connecting' for a while. If that's the case, move on to the next one.
Whatever I can't find there I just end up buying on iTunes.

Not the same, but I am able to listen to music at work by using Pandora. ( www.pandora.com) It sorts predicts what you might want to listen to.
I do not advocate the illegal downloading of mp3s through Soulseek, which can be downloaded at http://www.slsknet.org/! Should you use this program, I sincerely hope that you are only sharing files to which you own the copyright.

Pandora is rad - one of the most brilliant inventions of the Internet era, no doubt.
Ignoring semi-legal P2P programs, I use my eMusic membership religiously. It's heavy on independent music/alt-rock and electronic music, but it's absolutely amazing (and cheap as balls, compared to iTunes).

I use Bearshare and agree with the above caveat: Make sure you're not sharing files.

Don't know how Bearshare is these days, but it's been my experience (along with many others) that Bearshare clutters your system with ads and popups and files that could potentially harm your system.
I use Ad-Aware and SpyBot to rid my system of unwanted files and when I had Bearshare, I couldn't understand why I kept on getting unwanted files all over again. After I got rid of Bearshare, it was back to normal.

bt.etree.org
digitalpanic.org
tradersden.org
These are bittorrent though. You have to have a FLAC converter to listen to them after the download.
WinMX is a good site for mp3's.
