Since then, we've come a long way. It's amazing that anyone takes a man like Byrd seriously these days after the way he opposed the Civil Rights Act.

I think we have a long way to go yet in some places though.

Well you can change public policy but you can't change the way people think. That's where the problem lies.

Agreed. I do think things are changing though for the better. Centuries of segregation and injustice don't evaporate overnight (or even in 40 years).

People change. Look at Nancy Reagan. 10 or 12 years ago I doubt she would have been in favor of stem-cell research.
