Widescreen vs. Fullscreen - Page 2

I didn't realize how many people liked widescreen. No wonder it's so popular! I can't stand it though. Give me full screen any day (unless I'm watching a movie on a widescreen tv!) Widescreen is so squished, I can't see a thing!

The point is that the next time you buy a TV set, it will likely be a wide screen and then all of the DVD's & stuff you buy now will BE full screen on the new set!

I heard today on the radio that some manufacturers are going to continue making 3x4 aspect ratio TV's for a while. Buying one would be dumb, though.

Your natural field of vision has an aspect ratio that is wider than 16x9 (1.78:1) sets, and much wider than 4x3 (1.33:1) sets. You're just used to the 4x3 sets.

As far as squished, that's probably from 16x9 sets using stertch modes for 4x3 programming. Most TV manufacturers use poorly implemented stretch modes. The only one that I've seen that gets it right is Loewe.

Most TV, that isn't live, is now produced widescreen. That means that you either watch it with black bars on the top and bottom, or that the sides (pan and scan) are chopped off, and you are not seeing the whole picture.

I had an old motel tv from the 80's for about 6 years. This year, I just bought a Philips tv but it's not widescreen.

We only buy widescreen-- but we have a 55" hdtv widescreen tv in the family room. And a 40 something" widescreen in the bedroom (not sure why--that was husbands doing.)

I feel you on that one... my fiance wants to buy another big screen (probably in the high 30s-low 40s range) for the bedroom (I'm against tvs in the bedroom altogether, but especially a big screen) when we already have a disgustingly huge tv in the living room. The TV dimension is only 2 inches shorter than I am (65").... that's just wrong. TVs should not be the same size as people. You have to sit 10 feet back from the thing just to see it clearly.

Not to say I don't like it, but... it was definitely a pre-me purchase

I think had I had a say we'd have something at least a *little* bit more reasonable!

I used to think that men and women should be treated the same. Then I became an A/V salesman. After 9 years in this industry, I can tell you that women are more likely to like widescreen, and more likely to hate big TVs. Not dislike. Hate. Its usually not the screen size, but the footprint. That's why plasma panels have become so popular. Its a strange thing seeing a technophobic fashonista buying a $10,000 panel, but that's what has happened.

You're right, actually. Having the huge screen is pretty cool. Having a bohemoth of a tv taking up part of the living room is not. I think the actual box stands 6+ feet tall (it's definitely taller than me, and I'm 5'7"), by almost as much wide, and probably 2 - 3 feet deep. That's a big footprint.

I don't hate our tv.... but I do think it could go on a diet

I just hate it when I'm at work at blockbuster and people can't understand that when you rent a DVD 90% of the time it's going to be WIDESCREEN! Unless you have the option of picking from the on-screen menu it will have those bars at the top and the bottom. That's why you bought a DVD player, to see things how the director intended it!

Unless you buy a DVD in Fullscreen I can't help you!

I prefer widescreen...when I do stuff for class I usually shoot in widescreen because it's a cleaner shot!
