joel steinberg

Joel Steinberg is set to be released from prison tommorrow. If any of you recall this is the guy who murdered his adopted daughter, Lisa Steinberg, in 1987. The case was also well known because he was also beating his wife, Hedda Nussbaum. How do you all feel about this?

I was hoping that his fellow prisoners would make his eventual release a moot point.

I agree with Russ. I don't know if this story was national news or just news in New York. I suspect that most of the people on GC don't remember this story since they were so young when it happened. It was terrible.

I'm against it whenever a murderer is released from prison.

I remember Geraldo had a news magazine show where he covered this story I believe. He called the mother "battered woman" , hardly ever refering to her by her real name

murder, rape, abuse these are all interesting topics. i am looking at it from the role of a social worker and what if this was my client?

it creates a whole bunch of ethical issues for me. as a social worker you have to think about protecting your client, but you also have the responsibility of protecting the community at large.

Yes, it was on the national news.

I am the same age that Lisa Steinberg would be today, and I definitely remember it. Just because some of us are young, it doesn't mean that we're completely clueless.

As for his release, I had no idea.

I don't think that young people are clueless at all, and I certainly didn't imply that. I thought that people who are in college might not remember since they were so young when Lisa Steinberg was murdered in 1987.

Heya Peaches, I knew what you meant. It's like the other day the person I am training for my old position is 21 and fresh outta undergrad. She didn't realize Reagan was an actor but she said (and understandly so) that he wasn't around in her era really. Makes sense. Also some people just aren't into news and politics. I think many people don't start following it and appreciating it all until they are a little older. Not everyone, but many.

He's out. I just watched a part of an interview that he gave two years ago. He still denied that he hurt his daughter. As part of his release, he cannot be in contact with children under the age of 18 or Hedda Nussbaum. She just quit her job and moved in order to avoid the media frenzy.

what makes this particular murderer any different than the hundreds of others who have killed their children?

It was unique at the time, and received huge amounts of media coverage. That coverage was the catalyst for a lot of legislation that reformed New York's laws.

Also, shouldn't this thread be in news & politics?

I was doing some research for my thesis the other day, and I read an article dealing with this case. What he did is pretty horrible... I think it's sick that he only got 16 years.
