Forced Alums
when people are pregnant, drop out of college, or chapter is closed because of hazing......do they automatically become alumi and forced to be in the alumni instead of just being inactive???

I'm not sure if different organizations have different views on this, but I do know that if a sister in SK gets pregnant or married they are expected to remain active unless they petition to go alum.
If you drop out of college (or go to another college w/out SK) you must have gone through initiation, paid your dues, & been in good standing before you can become alum.
And if the chapter is closed due to hazing...I wouldn't know.
I guess I could've just left it at different organizations probably have different views on each circumstance.

With AGD, if a member gets married or pregnant as a collegian, they are offered the option of taking alumna status. If they don't, then they are still able to remain an active collegian.
We rarely give "inactive" status to members. If EC decides to do so, it's on the promise that she'll return to the chapter, but in order to remain in good standing, the sister still must pay inactive fees.
If a sister drops out of college, she becomes an alumna because well, you have to be a full-time student to be a collegiate member of AGD.
If a chapter closes (regardless of infractions/low numbers), they are resolved into their alumnae chapter.
Being an alumna of AGD can be either one of two: alumna or alumna in good standing. Alumna in good standing is what you want to be.
You'll get a different bunch of replies with this. I'm sure it's different everywhere you go. "Being forced to" might not be the proper term for the different scenarios.
Lastly, because this irritates the crap outta me...as it has been said 3429384293847 times before:
alumnus -- male, singluar
alumni -- male, plural or male/female, plural
alumna -- female, singular
alumnae -- female, plural
One can never get enough of that small Latin lesson.

I don't have the time to do a search right now, but I remember a VERY extensive thread about this from awhile ago. may have been in greek life, i'm not sure, but it was a good conversation, I think.

For Zeta Tau Alpha, you must specifically request early alumna status if you leave the chapter prior to being a member for four full years. You must also be in good financial standing for the early alumna status to be granted.
If you marry during your collegiate period you do not have to become an alumna - it is an option but not required.

It depends on the situation. Sometimes they are expelled, sometimes they are called "alums".

I need to have a talk with my VPAR then b/c I was told that I could not remain an active if I married. It doesn't matter now b/c any and all plans have been shelved until I graduate next spring (fingers crossed) but I thought I'd have to go alum this fall instead of next spring like I had wanted to. This is good news for me then in case I decide to do something crazy like elope! (J/K! Mom would kill me if I don't give her a wedding)

i became alum because i am coming up on my fifth year and i would only be there for one more semester although it was only going to be my third year in the sorority because i was a transfer student. It felt pushed upon me but I felt disconnected from some of the girls because our lives are going in completely different directions so i guess in the end i guess it is the best descion

As far as the hazing thing goes, I'd think in general it'd depend on the situation. Those who were active hazers would likely be expelled or asked to turn in their pins and cancel their memberships. Those who were trying to fix things would more likely get the option of alumna status.
When Eta Psi closed in May, the junior and sophomore sisters were given the option of going through our alumna ceremony or not doing so. Apparently, if a sophomore transferred to another campus where there was an ADPi chapter, she could become an active member of that chapter as long as she hadn't gone through the full alumna process.
Once you graduate, of course, you're an alumna in good standing if you've been initiated and paid all of your dues.
Make SURE you pay all of your dues and anything you owe before you transfer/graduate, though, because if you don't you can not only be denied alumna status, you can have your membership cancelled for nonpayment! This goes for a number of fraternity and sorority organizations, so it's best to pay everything off ASAP or work off a payment with Nationals if you still owe anything the end of your senior year...

My boyfriend took a semester off from college and when he returned the following semester he was an alumnus by default. He didn't mind though since the only thing it changed for the most part was that he couldn't vote or raise motions.

AST is like the other NPCs.
You can choose to go alumna if you are married. I dunno if we differentiate between marriage and pregnant. If you drop out/transfer, if you are in good standing, you can become alumna.
I don't know anything about closures, but I would guess that it depends on the situation.

A local standpoint:
If a sister transfers, gets married, graduates before the required 3 year membership, and is in general good standing... she can go alum.
However, some girls just drop out during the summer and the house can't decide whether to give her alumna status. So we have a lot of "innactive" sisters. Sometimes girls just quit.

Another local standpoint:
You can go inactive/alum at any given time or even be asked to go into one of those status'. However we do highly encourage for sisters to stay as active as possible.
