yeah, this is realistic

one thing that i hate about made for tv disaster movies is the effects are so corny. i am watching it now and i feel like i am looking at a bad accident.. i cannot look away. i need help!

Corny special effects? Then you haven't seen the disaster movies of the 1970s, such as The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno and Earthquake The special effects of those movies thirty years ago was considered state-of-the-art back then, but comparing it to today's computer-generated special effects they look REALLY cheesy. Unlike George Lucas who did a complete revamping of special effects of the original Star Wars trilogy twenty years after they were first filmed, these disaster film classics will never be remade. (Though there is talk of a re-made Poseidon...)

BTW, Earthquake in its original theatrical release had a little gimmick called 'Sensurround', in which massive speakers in the theatre pumped out low-frequency noise at high volume to simulate an earthquake. A few theaters, including Mann's Chinese in Hollywood suffered minor structural damage as a result of having the speakers too loud.

I really tried to watch both 10.5 and Alias at the same time and i couldnt get into 10.5....corny!

The scary thing is the ppl at Cal Tech have been in the news a lot lately here talking earthquakes and the so callled "BIG ONE"...... the timing of this movie and them talking has me a little concerned.


What your suppose to do if an earthquake happens is to get under something very sturdy : doorway, desk, etc... and brace your self......now me on the other hand when we had the Landers/ Big Bear one (early 90s) i said screw that i ran outside to the open field next to us and waited it out and would not go back in! big nerd!

I lived in OKC when i first got married in the late 90s and we were there when the big tornado riped thru OKC and took out midwest city ... we were 15 minutes from the path of destruction as it traveled up the highways.......that was the one that sent us packing to come back home to so calif ....earthquakes and all!

Okay, if you were expecting realistic from a tv movie released during May sweeps, you've got big problems.

YES. I was thinking the same thing. I too am disappointed at the lack of cheese, although I am pretty stoked that John Schneider's in the movie.

I'm just curious...how many of us here have actually experienced natural disasters? Realistically speaking, of course -- you know, you, your family or your possesions damaged because of tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis or what not.

Me -- Hurricane Iwa (1982) and Hurricane 'Iniki (1992) -- our house needed extensive work both times and my uncle on Kauai lost his ROOF. The no electricity for days was really fun.

Holy crap, I didn't even realize that WAS John Schneider. I keep thinking he still has the platinum blond fluffy hair and skintight Bo Duke jeans.

NEVER and thank God cuz I think I'd pee a little in my pants! The closest I've ever been was a few times when the sky turned greekish yellow and that's freaky as hell.

And one time we were on our way home from Niagara Falls and it was dark out and the sky started turning bright red, so we sped the rest of the way back to my parents' friend's house. We sat in the basement, and of course I'm younger so I'm scared as hell. My brother and my dad's employee think it's teh coolest thing so they go outside and all of a sudden they come running down to the basement. A tornado came down the road I guess a few blocks away cuz some of the trees were twisted.

Back to the topic.... I wanted to see 10.5 really bad but I'm never home at that time. And I loved Night of the Twisters and Twister. AND Dante's Peak. Give me corniness any day!

I went through huricane Hugo way back in the day and some minor earth quakes while I lived in Cali(the kind you barely can tell).

I thought the movies was ok. A lot of cheese but the earth quake scenes seemed pretty realistic.

Several thoughts:

Schneider is doing a pretty good job.

Wasn't it interesting that the earthquake stopped right at the point where it swallowed the train?

Special effects keep getting better with technology. Just like everything else.

Have lived in tornado country most of my life and helped with news coverage of a number of them. Also, major airline crash -- but that's not a natural disaster, I guess. Never been in an earthquake and really don't want to be.

They keep talking about "Hearing from Denver." They really mean the USGS National Earthquake Center at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden -- a Western suburb of Denver. When I was with the local NBC, we had a permanent camera and microwave path there, and a repeater (boy, I have no idea how to spell this --- so maybe I won't try), one of the machines that makes the squiggly lines and measures earthquake intensity.

Don't know if I'll bother with tonight or not.

ETA -- earthquake safety procedure. A lot like tornado. Find a strong thing like a desk or door frame to get under. Sit down, put your head between your legs --- and kiss your a$$ goodbye.

movies like this, no matter how cheesy, always freak me out. after watching "dante's peak" (volcano movie with Pierce Bronson), I kept thinking... gee if I were in that situation... that would suck. Natural disaster movies always give me a feeling of "what if..." even though sometimes it's not geologically possible.

But i was in the bay area during the 1989 quake, just to answer the "ever been in a natural disaster question. Nothing was really damaged. Just some things fell in our house and whatnot. But the city itself was pretty messed up.
