Frater(?) Tony Brown
I had the opportunity to hear him present on Saturday at the Rock Mount NAACP Banquet. He said even if blacks and whites have equal education and ability blacks will still fall short. He gave the example of the two groups completing similar degree programs. Henoted blacks start off with $50, 000 in student loans - then marries someone with $50,000 in loans. Bro. Brown says blacks need to learn to invest in each other in order to create equal footing and advancement. Furthermore, he noted whites will take equity out of their home to pay for their children's education and leave them money and/or property so the next generation will have a better life.
Just food for thought - - -

I'm . Blacks don't/haven't do/done this? Or is it that MOST blacks don't do that?
Is he saying marry someone who is loan free? Dayum, that really makes your (my)slim picking S-L-I-M! As a student loan free person, that's all good, but it would be like finding a mustard seed in a haystack.

In my opinion those that are STUDENT LOAN free are CREDIT CARD dependent.

No credit card here!
ETA: My debit CARD doesn't have the VISA or MC logo. So, I guess I'm still CC free!
I learned from that Identity Theft to leave that alone.

Bro. Brown really was comparing why many of the majority have better economic gain than blacks. As stated, a black couple with $100,000 in loans coupled with the new house, etc. makes it much harder to reach the same economic playing filed of our counterparts.
I'm glad to learn that you don't have credit card debt but how much is your loan. We may have to remain soul mates - lol or be a broke ass couple

Maybe the chances increase if you marry someone that did not go to college. But that's probably a whole 'nother thread though.
But you are right - it would "J.J. Walker slim" picking for a lot of us.

My take is this...I think blacks fall short moreso because of lifestyle choices...there are many white couples out there with student loans in excess of 60k... but its their lifestyle that make a difference...WE have to have the latest car...or that BIG house..or keep up with the latest trends...we seem to know nothing about frugality. We like to wear our paycheck on our visible person...as if we want to show others that we have "made it" ..whereas other groups don't try to keep up with the Joneses as much as we seem to. We invest LESS and spend more...
Did your frat touch on this at all??

I agree with LOVE_SPELL_6
On the comment about spending more and saving less. For my birthday I purchased my dream Car, a BMW 330ci coupe (now before people say I'm casting stones and live in a glass house I had a 9 year old Honda Accord and I had been saving for that car for years). One day when I was out shopping, one of my friends called me. She was absolutely shocked when I told her I was at Wal-Mart. She said since I had the new car I should shop at a higher-end store because it would look strange for me to drive a BMW and shop at Wal-Mart.
I don't care what kind of car I'm driving I'm still going to value shop!
People need to realize that money can be here one day and gone the next..look at Kenneth Lay of Enron...

Nope - it was only a speech not an on-going discussion but I agree with your point.
