Everyone has different feelings about the initial question posed and DSuchaLady posted hers and for you to stoop to the level you did and then to come back at her and say leave the childishness out of "your" thread is rather hypocritical. You were the one who acted childish and it might have gone unchecked had someone not sent me a PM about the matter.

Oh and all the fake smiling does not work with me so kill it.

Yes, that 2nd article that you posted does mirror the majority of my concerns. I just feel like that Michigan is feeding into a certain group of people's "inner-city drug momma" stereotype of a welfare recipient, which is not the majority.

I think a lot of people forget that folks who live in rural, economically depressed areas (i.e Mississippi, Alabama, Kansas, etc.) receive benefits too. In these types of areas where jobs are few and far between, receiving these gov't benefits can be the difference between life and death.

I just do not think that drug testing for the sake of reducing the amount of people on welfare is effective.
I feel what you are saying HK. If they are going to test Shaniqua and Maria, then they better dayum well test Becky-Sue as well. There should be equal opportunity testing if any testing is to be done!

Ok...so is the issue with who's being tested, or just the testing?? Because I think that all recipients should be tested. This is the only way to prevent racial profiling

In the state of Michigan it's "Becky-Sue" that has a class action lawsuit against the state of Michigan regarding this case. Although testing all persons would be ideal, the problem is that welfare has been stereotyped solely with the black community and it is also assumed that Black/Hispanic mothers on welfare produce cracked out kids. The fact is more than 60% of people on welfare or drug addiction is people of Anglo-Saxon decent. Because we (Blacks)make up less than 25% of the American population, cases involving recipients of welfare is higher. This also is a prelude to another debate. If persons, particularly persons of A/A decent, are denied access to assistance then the issue of reparations comes into play. Since it is being said that African Americans deserve no financial disbursements the neglection of services primarily based on (random)drug testing can incite the ongoing debate of reparations. I mention this only because here, in the state of Michigan, reparations and drug testing for welfare recipients has been synonomous.

Program Pays Addicts to Use Birth Control
Date: Friday, April 16, 2004
By: Associated Press

MEMPHIS, Tenn.- Larry Scott stopped in his tracks when the stranger offered him $200 to have a vasectomy.

Scott, who said he is an alcoholic and crack addict, was walking down the street when Project Prevention founder Barbara Harris handed him a flier.

The North Carolina woman is driving through the Southeast offering cash to addicts and alcoholics who agree to use long-term or permanent birth control.

"It makes sense," said Scott, 43, taking an extra flier for his girlfriend. "I don't want to pass this on to a baby. I don't want to hurt somebody else just because I'm hurt."

And she remembers what one client once told her:

"A mother will cradle her crack pipe before she cradles her child."
