to answer everyone's questions as best I can...
Pairings are nothing more but matching two houses together for the month of social events that are planned around the Little 500 Race.
The "pairs" will support eachother (i.e. showing up for eachother's race days and cheering for them), they'll have socials together, they'll make t-shirts together, I'm sure other schools do this.
Its sort of a big deal because you are with this same group for about a month, so it gives you a great chance to meet a lot of people and have fun. If the pair is bad though (i.e. the houses hate eachother...or one of the groups lacks social skills...or social funds) then it can be a nightmare.
IU has 3 pairs, Homecoming, IU Sing, and Little 500. Sometimes people have unofficial pairings for things like Philanthropic events, etc.
People are paired for two of these by filling out numbers on a preference sheet. So, the sorority or fraternity that you want to pair with the most, you put first, and then so forth.
For the most part, its mutual (the sorority and fraternity want to be with eachother).
IU Sing is a random pair. This, for the most part, is done to force houses to try someone they wouldnt normally be caught dead with.
As for the fraternities, A lot of fraternities have been put on probation at IU, so they not all are allowed to be involved in social events, thats why the list is not all inclusive
Rumor has it that even some sororities are on social probation, so they can't have a pair either.
I cant comment on Phi Mu or ZTA becuase I havent heard anything. They may be on probation, or they may not. I'm sure they will be competing on race day.
