this happened to a friend of mine:
it's over when you're already dating someone else
but for me:
it's over when you get sick of explaining who this "James" person is and why he keeps trying to talk you into doing "naughty things"

Hey doing it in the Church on the Altar in-between masses was your idea! As well the toys . . and the ensemble cast of extras: The dancing midgets, the donkey, and the sheep!

when the phone rings, and it's someone else, and you're so relieved it's not your SO that you thank that person for calling.
I've always found that to be a clear signal.
