Questions about your motivation and academics

Can you please answer the questions and then just take a look at them to see if you need to improve on your study habits.

1. Do you think you are studying as hard as you should?

2. Are there areas where you could improve?

3. Do you feel as though your gpa represents who you are or gauge how smart you really are?

4. How do you motivate yourself to continue to study?

My answers:

1. No I don't think I am studying as hard as I should. I feel as though I put things off until the last minute and then I rush to get them done and I also feel as though I do not give enough time to my studies. There are time when I could be studying instead I'm checking my e-mail or watching TV, talking on the phone, etc. I procrastant alot.

2. Yes, I need to get better organized so that I am not forgetting about assignments. Getting better organized will give me enough time to study for test. Other areas of improvement for myself are to make sure I read my chapters in advance to make sure I do well on my test. I also could improve on my note taking skills. Turning off the TV would do alot of good too.

3. Yes and No because right now I have a culmutive gpa of 3.3 and my fall semester was 2.9. I know that I am smart I just need to push myself harder to make the good grades.

4. Prior to becoming a little "lazy" I use to motivate myself by watching my favorite TV show, buying a new magazine, relaxing, reading a new book, going out for 3 nights in a row, buying myself something nice.

i could barelly bring myself to answer those questions! i know i'm definately lacking... idk what happened- in high school i really cared about my grades and did well- then around senior year- i got lazier and lazier- and now i feel like i'm just riding on putting everything off and finishing it at the last minute- i try to get things done sooner- but i don't have the attention span or motivation... i need a motivational coach lol

1. I think I am studying as hard as I can...I think I can up my game a little more, but I don't want to be stressing myself out. So I try to put in at least 3 hours a day dedicated to studying.

2. The only thing I need to improve is in focusing...You can read a chapter and say yeah I read it...but do you comprehend it. I know a lot of peeps and myself who are victims to this....once you comprehend it just so easily flows....

3. My current GPA...is a reflection of me gradually climbing the ladder and that I am trying to excel in every area that I can.

4. Motivating myself to study is pretty easy...its like this: I want in A in this course....obviously I have to study to get that A...its not going to be handed to me...My parents are also my motivation....they are from Haiti...they never had a chance to go to college...and so I always keep them in mind. I am a daddy's girl, the look on his face to see his 1st born graduate from college PRICELESS!!!

What I would to do get around this is write a little summary, in my own words, for each section of the chapter. Or, outline the chapter on paper as you read.

Wink I'll answer the questions soon, I promise!

If you have to motivate yourself in unorthodox ways, do so.

I have no problem admitting that I HATE SCHOOL right now. I feel like I'm wasting a lot of money, I'm bored as hell most of the time, and my classmates are competitive idiots. My only motivation to finish at all is so I can get a good job in the field. Then, I will get a graduate degree in another aspect of my field so I can own my own architecture and restoration firm.

But, in order to get a good job, I have to actually do well in class. My motivation to do well may sound stupid to some of you, but I have to do this in order to deal with the stupidity of my program. Maybe it will help you out!

1). If I go to all my classes this week, then I'll go out to eat here instead of ordering takeout or cooking for myself. Or maybe I'll go out for a movie, or to a swanky bar. I've been rewarding myself for the insane weeks by really letting loose on the weekends.

2). If I finish this paper that's due Thursday on Tuesday, then I can sleep in Thursday morning instead of pulling an all-nighter. Or, if I finish a weekend project earlier--I can meet some friends for brunch or spend some time loafing around watching a movie during the afternoon.

3). If I get this great internship--as opposed to a crappy one that everyone else is applying for (our internships are based on portfolio quality, writing samples, etc, and we're all competing for the same jobs), then I'll buy myself that shirt at Thomas Pink I've been lusting after.

4). If I achieve a certain grade goal for the end of the semester, then I'm buying myself something really great. Or, I'm taking a week off at the beach or lake.

It's all about the short-term, small-scale goals, and rewarding yourself. When I'm really sick and tired of my classmates, unimpressed by my teachers, and just generally sick of everything--I think about the small-scale goal.

Yeah, whatever works! Myself, I love the feeling of having everything done early, but a lot of times that just doesn't happen. The pressure of an approaching deadline is usually what motivates me...I just can't buckle down when the deadline is weeks off.

To be honest, I've never been much for studying. It makes me sound like a slacker, but honestly I'm not. This semester I felt guilty so I would join study groups or actually study for a test. After the grades I got, I reverted to my old habits and I have improved drastically since then! I think it's something about my learning style.

I don't know if they make shirts for girls, but Ascot Chang, Charvet, and Turnbull are much less commercialized. I stopped shopping at Pink when I heard a guy working in a mortgage company say he shopped there.
