Alpha Kappa Phi: interesting!

KappaCrow's post of the news story from SUNY-New Paltz took me to the New Paltz campus website. I was curious to know what sororities are on that campus. I found this one: Alpha Kappa Phi or the Agonian sorority. It's part of a small "national," or perhaps "state," since the chapters are all in New York. Founded in 1885!!

Here's the history.

Are any "Ago's" on GreekChat?

There are a couple regionals in the NY State schools, Ago, Arethusa, and Clionian.

The Clionian chapters joined ASA sometime in the late 40's - early 50's. When SUNY made all the sororities drop national affiliation, they went back to Clionian, except for Alpha Sigma Chi who stayed on their own.

How do I know so much about this you ask? Because I was moved to investigate after years of looking at our closed chapter list and wondering WTF a "Gamma Clio" chapter was.

The Agonian badge...

There have been a few Agonian badges on ebay in the past few years and they are sooooo cool, they look like a Delta Gamma anchor. Sooo beautiful!

Im a New Paltz alum. The 3 national sororities are D*Phi*E, SDT & AEPhi.

TKE, Kappa Sig, ZB (formerly ZBT), Pi Alpha Nu and KDPhi were the frats we hung out with back then.

There also are a lot of local and multicultural organizations. I can't think of all of them off the top of my head but in terms of sororities, they had Omega Phi Beta, Sigma Iota Alpha, AKA, Sigma Gamma Rho and Zeta Phi Beta.

The organizations that are recognized by SUNY New Paltz are listed on the school's website, www.newpaltz.edu under student organizations.
